Balancing a Super Star 120
 

I have a Super star 120 with a Magnum 1.80 four stroke. I can NOT get the thing to balance out with out a TON of weight screwed to the firewall. I am afraid to fly it this way. Any help would be GREATLY Appreciated. I put 12 ounces on the motor mount and it is pretty close to balancing out. Any thoughts???????

I can't see anything else you could do... unless you're willing to uncover and rebuild the whole tail section with lighter wood and better framing, and maybe even part of the aft fuselage...

The last modification was the location of the CG. The instruction manual instructs you to balance the SuperStar 7cm (2 3/4") back from the leading edge of the wing root. However a technical bulletin on Horizon's website corrects this by saying this measurement is to be made at the wing tip. This put the CG right on the back edge of the main wood spar where the leading edge sheeting ends. After balancing the plane at the recommended tip location, I decided to see where that placed the CG at the wing root. I wasn't surprised to find that the recommended CG balanced the plane right in the middle of the main wood spar. 5 1/8" (130mm) was the measurement to this point at the wing root. I included it in this article because balancing the plane close to fuselage was much easier than at the tips

hello guys...I just was given the Superstar 120 without a manual. This is my first plane that has the wing somewhat in the center of the fuse. My question is...when balancing this plane is it done right side up or inverted?

I have one, and have been flying it for the past 2 years. I don't think inverted or upright matters much as far as CG measurements. The 5 1/8" location is pretty safe; if desired, the cg could be moved back a little more. I have a CRRC Pro 26cc gas engine on it, with about 2 3/4" of spacer between it and the firewall. (A little more engine wouldn't hurt it.) The main thing is that you have to land with some throttle on - otherwise it will drop suddenly and bounce. It isn't a trainer, and it isn't a slow floater!
