This was an awesome experience in Switzerland

Some pictures and walk through history. The plane flew pretty well too. I got to talk to one of the local modelers that was HERE IN PERSON spectating here Dubendorf at the 1960 world championships. It was pretty awesome. I wanted to interview him on video but he declined.

Some additional pictures. Anyone remember the Norm Page design, "Mach 1"?

The competition director and event planner planned demonstrations of various models over the years. There must have been 20 or 30 models on display and demo flights for each decade going back to 1960.

Some additional planes. Some may bring back a few memories! Does anyone remember which plane Christophe scraped his rudder tip while doing low rolls and passes down the runway at Pensacola?

And some classics in attendance!

Wolfgang Matt's first worlds was 1967. He announced at the banquet that 2015 would be his last world championships. A true champion and mentor for so many at the competition. His name is all over the F3A awards podium for decades. Dick Penrod in attendance. U.S. team manager from the 1970's and TOC line director.

Wow, a 48 year span and I'm pretty sure he's competed in every WC. Too bad he's not going to fly in 2017 and celebrate 50 years of FAI F3A competition. Maybe Roland will start competing again to keep the family tradition alive!

Congratulations to the US Team and, of course, Joseph. How much longer will he be able to compete as a junior? A bit of an unfair advantage for the US... 4 top twenty pilots!

Wild Beat, this is an awsome piece of history you have shared in this link. Thank you.

Yep - had a Mach 1 in the '70's -a Midwest Kit , I believe.

Don Szczur 05-17-2017 05:15 PM

Wolfgang is still flying and competing, but just not at the World Championships. Roland? We shall see I suppose that chapter has yet to be written!

Ron Stahl 02-06-2018 07:29 PM

I have a nib Mach 1 kit, it is by Midwest.

I know I'm late to the party but those classics, does anyone know what the model is next to the alliance? All I can read is "AT 2000". Love to know more about it. Really like the lines.

Cheers
Steve

Found a few more from the file... other historic planes and museum pictures from that Worlds. This was a pretty incredible event. Many thanks to Bernard for all the work he put into organizing this world championships.

Thanks Don! Fantastic photos.

So it is the Karat 2000 by Ewald Trumpp! I wonder if there was ever plans made available of this design?

Cheers
Steve
