RE: Build your own PBF (Pizza Box Flyer, Flying Pizza Box)
Heres a vid of my first flight with my pbf. The biggest coroplast i could find was 18in. Its 18x18, OS Max-S 35, 9x6 prop, 3ch throttle, rudder, elevator. It flies great but i got over confident and tried to come into a hover and crashed it. BTW this is my first nitro plane flight also

Definately not a bad maiden for a PBF. They are such strange planes but so much fun. I'm not too sure but I might try less pitch on that prop it makes a huge difference and the right prop makes it so much fun.

I use a 10x4 with my 40 fp, so maybe a 9x4, or try an 8x4. I'm not really sure, you'll have to experiment, or maybe someone else has a suggestion.
Good luck.

Thank you Dave, I owe it all to you and your webpage. I just got back from the hobby store with a few 8x4 S-2 Series master airscrews. Ill try them out tomarrow hopefuly. I have a os max 15. How small do you think i could go with it?

A 15 size engine should work pretty good on a 18x18 PBF. And those 8x4 props should be a perfect match for the 15 engine.
Replacing the 35 with a 15 should get rid of a lot of dead weight, which should make your PBF fly better too.

The prototype PBF first flew with an old HB 15 and an 8x4 prop. The OS 15 should be a little more powerful. If you can keep the weight down to under 1.5 pounds, the 15 should be able to hold a vertical hover.

You guys may want to try using Tornado props, especially those new to PBF's. They will flex on impact, not break, and save you a ton of money on props!!
The only problem I've found is the in flight flexing causes less pull, so I compensate by going to the next higher pitch.
I've been flying the same prop for 2 years.......and when they get way out of shape, drop them in some boiling water for about 3 minutes....they straighten right back!!!
You can thank me later!!!

RC_Maniac, where can you get them? I searched yahoo but couldnt find anything except a place that sold 5x4 Tornado props but no other sizes.

Tornado props are made by Grish.
They are a perfect match to a PBF because they are nearly unbreakable.
Unfortunately, finding Grish props in the sizes needed for a PBF is going to be very hard to do. The Master Airscrew props are the second best choice, but a distant second place.

I have to say the Airscrews are pretty flexable. I just had three good flights with minor crashes and didnt break a prop. I would still be out there but my glow starter went dead

RE: Build your own PBF (Pizza Box Flyer, Flying Pizza Box)
Here is my 4th PBF. It has a .049 engine and sub micro servos. I think it weighs 8 or 9 ozs RTF. A regular Cox .049 has just enough ooomph to hover it and it will fly great with just 2 channels and the rudder tied off.
Set up like in the photos with a more powerful engine and 4 channels makes it the most aerobatic 1/2A plane I've flown.
The frame work is 1/4"x1/4" balsa sticks and all the places where the sticks meet were doweled with toothpicks. The elevons and rudder are rigged with Spiderline fishing line.
IIRC, it is about 18"x18" total.

Well i took a drastic jump in prop size, I tried a 10-6 and 11-7. Man what a diff. it made, so much faster and more responsive. Heres a few vids of it.

Maybe you guys can help me out. I just got 2 engines and do not know anything about them. One is a HP 40 black case with a gold head. The other is a Irvine 40. They both have great compression and the guy said they had only been on starting blocks. Let me know if you guys know anything about them.
The HP is made in Austria and the Irvine is made in England.
