Default Which servos/engine -- OMP Katana kit

Hey

Im getting this plane soon and would like to hear your opinions on servos and engine choice.

I have an OS .46AX with an APC 12.25x.3.75. Will this combo be good for 3d?

Which servos do you guys use on your .40 profiles? Will the Hitec 475s be good for the rudder and tail?
Will an HS81 be enough or will the vibrations kill the gears?
What for ailerons?

Thanks

From everything I've seen and heard, standard servo's will do fine in this plane... Most of the .46 AX's that I've flown, like the 11.5 x 4 prop.. but one of them was strong enough to pull the 12.25 x 3.75... so my guess is you'll just have to wait and see, but one of those props will work for sure.....

I've personally flown a few of these Katana's and I've got to say it is one of the most rockin' planes out there right now....

Thanks.

Im pretty confident that the OS will turn the APC prop. I have an OS .40 FX with that prop on my Dazzler and can hover it fine.

Which servos do you recommend in particular? Hitec 425s , Futaba 3004...?

Thanks

I like the Hitec 425's.... I hate those darned split insulators that come with the 3004's.

Both are rated pretty close for torque.... I've ran both with good luck.. So take your pick, either way you're okay.

The .46 should be perfect for your Katana, but I am betting on the 11.5x4 being the better prop for it.

As for servos, I have both the Hitecs and the Futaba's mentioned in similar sized birds.... Despite the split insulators on the Futabas, they are much faster on a 6v pack than the Hitecs, so they would be my pic! An HS81 is fine on the throttle but has no place anywhere else on the plane.....

You will love this thing.... It is a killer plane!

(now if I can just find time to build my own Katana kit so I don't have to beg to fly other guys Katanas...)

Actually Jeremy.... I'm not a Hitec salesman, but....

From the specs on the ServoCity site...

servo speed @ 6 volt price
3004 single ball bearing .19 sec $13.99 (10% off for 3 - 5, 15% off 6+)
425BB dual ball bearing .16 sec $14.99 (10% off for 3 - 5, 15% off 6+)

Whatever the specs, the Futabas in my Boxxer are much faster than the Hitecs in my Burrito....

I've got Hitec 425's and a 46 spinning an APC 11.5x4 in my Katana. I like the combo.

Specs lie! I have compared servos side by side several times. I program a mix on my gear channel and set endpoints so the servos don't over travel. I plug both servos into the rx one in gear channel and one in the slaved channel. You can visibly see which servo is faster this way. I was comparing some Hitec servo to a Futaba 9202. The 9202 is rated about .26sec/60 degrees. The Hitec was rated around .20. The 9202 was definitely faster and centered much better(no overshoot). I have wondered whether Hitec rates their servos at full travel speed and Futaba and JR rate theirs from stopped position, move 60 degrees and stop. My suspected Hitec method would eliminate accelerating and decelerating time thereby giving much better spec times.

My Katana is getting an OS50SX, Tower muffler and Futaba 9001 servos with a 720mah 5 cell pack. All I have left to do on mine is open the box, build it, cover it and install the gear.

Interesting research Matt... Thanks for sharing your findings...

I personally really like the Futaba 9202's... the center soo nice.. and have great torque... The supposed slow speed doesn't really bother me, cause I don't normally cycle the surfaces that fast anyway.....

All around, I'd have to say they are my favorite servo for 40 - 90 sized birds.

I started using them on my Fury heli and got so I really liked them also. I think the 9001s are a lighter faster version of the 9202. AM Cross said they had the same amps and pots. I use the 9001s more since they are a bit cheaper. I keep wanting to set up a test rig using my pc for timing and positioning data collection. I can do the mechanicals and most of the electronics but I can't do the programming. One of these days I'll run into someone that can cover that part of the project. I thought it would make a cool magazine project but I doubt it would get published due to showing how bad some advertisers servos really are and how the specs don't match up with their claims.
Maybe someday.

I got the 9001's on 6V all around on my Katana (you flew it Pauly) and it seems a real nice match to me. And you can get the 9001's for $29 each at servocity.

Thanks for the help guys.

Here is the final setup:
Hitec 475s on the rudder and elevator
Futaba 3004 for the Ailerons
Hitec HS81 for the throttle
OS .46AX with 12.25x3.75

Is this the propeller you guys are talking about? [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX1564&P=7]APC 11.5x4[/link] Ill see if I can get my hands on one to try out.

Any comments about the servo setup? Are you sure the HS81 will hold up with the vibrations?

Thanks

will give the Multiplex digis a try on my Katana ARF. Bought 2 Profi (metal gear) for elevator and rudder and 2 Royal (nylon gear) for the ailerons. We will see how they hold up.
I know that Hitec is distributing Multiplex, but hope that they are still better then Hitec. Multiplex is still made in Germany correct ?

Forgot to ask something.

What did you guys buy to complete the kit in terms of accessories (wheels...)? Please list sizes as well.

How many extensions will I need? 2 12" and 2 6" ?

Do I need any bolts, axles, or anything else?

Thanks

BTW, I changed the ailerons servos to Hitec 425 just because I can get those with airtronics connectors.
