Can't quite figure how to do that. But PLEASE go to the photo gallery and look my name up: simionla, and the pictures are there in a larger size. Hope you can check it out. LUKE

Wow! finally flew my Hybrid this weekend awesome flyer. Had it up 12 times the DA50 combo works great torque rolls and hovers with ease does a nice flat spin and a awesome knife edge spin wat is the best smoke system to go with the DA50? My plane came in at 16 lbs dry. I went with 1 JR 8611 in each wing and 8611 on all other surfaces (manual choke) along with nelson hobbies control horns and rods. I have either a engine thrust or balance issue in that my Hybrid when rolled inverted from level flight climbs fairly fast and when landing I have been using 1 click down elevator to land otherwise it doesn't want to come down any ideas before i start trial and error?
Thanks !

KA,

It's great to hear you got your Hybrid up and flying. It's also great to hear you built yours at 16 lbs dry. Both our OMP ones were around 16 1/4 lbs. A lot of folks build heavy and on a plane this big that can add up to quite a bit more!

I used the simple Dubro smoke valve setup and plumbed a pressure tap off the back of the DA to pressurize the tank. Call DA to get advice. I did and they are always very helpful. I also wrapped brass tubing around the header pipe several times to help preheat the smoke oil before injecting it into the header. I certainly had plenty of smoke.

What do you recommend on the inverted flight issue thrusting or balance problem? To save weight I make my own axles using 10-32 motor studs and I went with the Dave Brown foam wheels I also used contest grade balsa in the rear. Before the maiden flight all controls were set level and straight and I did not have to do any trim changes during the maiden I have always had to set trims on every other bird that I built. Boy that DA 50 runs so smooth compared to my ZDZ 80 no comparison!

Quicksand it can be a couple of problems really. But yes the basic ones that jump to mind for me and that I would look at first is Centre of Gravity. If it's too tail heavy it will do exactly what you described. So try a chunk of lead in the nose just as a temporary to see if that solves it.

Sorry, missed that question! Yes it sounds like you are tail heavy. If you trim your plane for level flight at about 3/4 power and then roll inverted and it climbs then you are most definately tail heavy. Either move stuff forward or add nose weight. If the plane changes attitude when you change your speed then you have an up/down thrust issue. On the other hand if you change your attitude when you get turned upside down, then you've had too much to drink! ha ha

Well after adding nose weight I have come to the conclusion i need some up thrusting. When I pull up it pulls towards the canopy. Here are some pics. I went with A DA50 DA exhaust JR 8611 i on each aileron-2 elevator-1rudder futaba 3004 on throttle. made a push /pull manual rod for choke which works great!

Flys great! Hovers at 1/4 throttle with little effort when ballanced properly! Compared with a 33% extra Does all the same arobats but lands in a small feild where the extra can't. I plan on adding a smoke system this winter.

What's your dry weight? 1/4 throttle is pretty impressive.

Shade under 15.5 lbs I built it light using the DA muffler, 1 servo per aileron 8611A ( which works excellent) , I went with very light weight foam wheels ( They compress under the weight slightly but have had no problems landing when I store it I put a block of wood under the aluminum landing gear to keep the weight off the wheels) I also weighed my sheeting and balsa sticks that were used in the rear fuse went down to the LHS with my scale and substituted to get the lightest wood for the rear. I build light.

15.5 is about as light as you can get I believe. The OMP demo models come out to about 16-16.25 so you did good for sure.

Flew it all day the DA50 is ballistic unlimited verticle! I have been fine tuning the thrust angle and CG man it also excells at presision aerobats as well as Hovering and 3D I had a stiff crosswind and it landed with ease all in all an impressive machine. I have the smaller profiles but this kicks there azzzzz!!!!!
Thanks for a great designed plane. Kurt

Fantastic. We also were surprised how well the Hybrid flew precision patterns. My son Forrest was really "connected" to the Hybrid....just before the radio failed last fall!

Just an update for those who have been waiting for the next kit run. Wood is ordered and expected this week. laser cutting will follow and pruduction started next week. So kits should be available by early Oct.

Salmon how does the 24" prop compare to the 22" prop that I have on my DA50? Will the Hybrid fly even better with a Larger prop? I know the larger Dia. props on my smaller profiles perform better than smaller props.
Thanks Quicksand

Prop size depends on many factors. I've run the 24-8 but throttle response is a bit slower than a 22-8 or even the 23-8. All will work though. No ARFs for Hybrids, have to build one! Building is fun!

i have built both a GS 540 and a yak and enjoyed the process on both kits equally.

over the past few years i have traded out of both planes and I miss them terribly.

have a zdz 50 on order and am seriously considering this airplane again. (the only reason I didn't order one when they first came out was because I had the two other profiles in the hanger)

i love your designs, is there anything big (80" or larger) coming down the pike that we should know about?

The Hybrid is 92" and a real joy to fly. It was designed to be a huge fun fly plane but surprisingly it will perform the IMAC manuevers very well. My son Forrest used to practice with it all the time. We always have plans for more designs. Time is the only thing I am lacking![:@]
