RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
I flew the Kat 40 on all 4 strokes with the 14x4W APC, and with no tach info (just subjective "feelings"), I'll say I believe the YS 63 is stronger than the Saito 72. I thought the Saito 82 was a bit stronger than both. I also flew my Kat with the Saito 82 and a Pro Zinger 15x4. I LOVED IT! If I do another, that will be the combo for me.[8D]

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
For lateral balance, as long as I think it is within the width of the fuselage I like it.
Some say to hold the crankshaft (off compression stroke) and the top of the rudder and hang the plane to watch for a wing tip to consistently dip.
I just put my fingers under the fuselage, one fore one aft, and see if I can balance it for a few seconds without too much work. If I can, it's close enough. A precision pattern machine might need a stringent lateral CG, but these planes fly well, even if only "close enough".
Some folks like to do that upside down too. Some say with a partial tank of fuel. Again, it is not a super critical measurement.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
Permanent on the 40, and removable on the 70. There was discussion of a limited run of the 40 with the removable wing (Pitts too), but the start up time and cost made a small run too expensive. There didn't seem to be too many folks interested in paying an upcharge, so the plan was set well back on the back burner. It will likely not ever happen, but I can't swear to that as fact.
BTW, a little birdie tells me the Kat 70 is on sale now...

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
CG I'd say sure but, its been my experience a 4 stroke is just better for 3D type planes. I have a saito 82 on the way for mine. I want a 15x4 for tons of prop wash on my kat GS 40. I use a oS 46AX with a 12x4 now, it works fine, but wont pull from a hover with authority. Since you already have the strong 50, I say try it. That engine should swing a 13x4 fine.
If I remember right you had or have a twist, The KAT is so much nicer IMHO.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
Thanks guys, I dont' have a Webra for it I just wondered what I could expect out of one if I bought one. I do have a Saito 72 that I could take from another plane and use that but I would have to replace it with another Saito 72 or 82. The idea of getting a Webra 50 would save me about a 100 bucks.....

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
i read the first page and the second page and then jump to the last page... anyways, i just got my 4th flight on my Hangar 9 Funtana today and totaled it, i lost elevtor control during a dive.... so now i'm back to the less expensive models. i've heard good things about this plane just in this thread like NO WING ROCKING, that got my attention right away. i'm looking to buy a Katana GS40 and still can't decide a good, reliable but cheap engine yet. can someone here help me? how about servos? just standard ballbearing, which one is best to remove the slop on the control surfaces?
this one is for the customers who bought from accel directly or OMP. which one provide better service? shipping faster?
i ask because i saw a thread in the OMP forum saying now respond from OMP

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
OMP and Accel have Kats from the same container, and all are identical. Both companies will shi[ ASAP.
As far as inexpensive engines that perform, loads of folks like the Thunder Tiger 46, and rightfully so. I am not partial to the GMS or Tower lines. I do like the Webras. All of that is opinion, and there are to be others, I'm sure.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
Dude, I have ordered from both companies and they both give pretty good service. I had a little problem with OMP and a replacement plane. John did take care of the problem. I may have been a little impatient on the return, but it still only took a week. The Kat 40 is a great plane. I think you will enjoy it more than the funtana. It makes me look alot better than I really am.
As for as engines, I like the O.S. 46 AX. I've had several with out a problem. They fly the Kat 40 great.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
We have both the white and yellow still in stock and we are all done with vacations now so give us a yell. Orders taken in the morning are shipped that afternoon. There are literally tons of threads on engine and servo choices and setups for 40 size profiles. Do a quick run down the threads or search and you will find loads of info. Any reliable 2-stroke .46 BB or better or 63-72 4-stroke will rocket these planes.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
The awsome thing about these planes is that you can use standard servos and a good .46 BB engine and get awsome performance. In the past I have spent tons of Cash on Carbon fiber items, mini metal gear servos, expensive engines, and lithium batteries. With this plane you get AWSOME performance on standard gear. Also you can meet the advertised weight with standard gear...other mfg must weigh their planes on the moon or something because without a lot of expensive gear they are heavier than advertised. Not with the Kat 40. This is an AWSOME plane that will build your 3D skills and impress your friends. I built mine and let a friend fly it. He ordered one the same day! Now that is proven performance

The O.S. 46 AX is great on this plane. For the money you can't beat it. Thats just my opinion. My plane has this engine and all standard gear and wieghs 4.25 lbs. It rocks this plane.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
Thanks Bigal422. Just wanted to make sure so I can start ordering the gear for it. I was thinking of taking a Saito 72 off another plane and putting it on the Kat but it then I would have to replace the Saito with something else. Now it sounds like I just need to get an AX. What type of receiver and RX battery do you have? Did you use the lighter types or just standard?

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
CeeGee, I use standard servos and a standard receiver. I use a hobbico hydromax 650mha battery. I like the 4.8 batteries. I don't want to have to run a regulator. This battery is 4 AAA cells.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
CeeGee,
You do not have to run a regulator with 5 cells, you just get more torque and speed with a minimial weight addition vs 4 cells. These are the best they use Sanyo cells: http://www.cermark.com/Merchant2/mer..._Code=5HR-AAAU weight is 2.5oz. Here is a cheaper solution I use these on my combat planes and have never had a problem.

weight 2.3oz
Hope this helps

Hummm.... Well, now I'm confused. I guess there is some stuff I need to learn about batteries. What's a regulator?[:-] I was going to use this battery once in came in stock. The weight on it is only 1.6 oz.

RE: Kat 40 Dude!!
That battery will work fine a 4 cell 4.8 volt NiCd or NiMh is the standard battery that most systems use. I prefer to use 5 cell 6v batterys because they give you more power(torque and speed) with adding minimal weight. 98% of all modern servos and recievers are designed to handle 5cells/6volts. only some micro and off brand servos have trouble with 6 volts...You do not need to run a regulator with a 5 cell system. Some pattern or IMAC flyers run regulators with 5 cell NiMh and/or NiCD batterys so they always have the exact same voltage at the begining and end of the pack...In order to achieve more precision resolution out of their servos. You do not need it on the Kat 40 you would not know the difference. If you go ti Lithium Inon Cylendrical or Li Poly 7.4V then you do have to have a regulator because the voltage is to high for the servos and reciever.
NICD....very forgiving, can be overcharged, overheated, and abused and keeps on kicking...some clame memory effect and the weigh considerably more that NiMh. easy to charge
NiMh....not as forgiving.....much lighter weight....no memory...peak charger must be able to charge NiMh....its peak is different than NiCd
Lithium....extremly light...requires an external regulator when used on Rx/servos....no memory....must use special Charger...sensitive to overdischarge less than 3v/cell will kill the battery.
I recomend the Cymark battery i talked about above it is NiMh 5 cell 6volt and weighs less than the 4 cell one you talked about. I have used these on all my 60 and smaller planes for several years and never had a problem...it is a cheap way to save a little weight.
let me know if you have any more questions

I'm not CeeGee, but I do think you for the info on the batteries. I'll check them out. I've wanted to go to 6 volts but thought you had to run a regulator. Thanks agian for the info.
