Thumbs or thumbs and fingertips
Which way do you funfly? Are you "all-thumbs", or do you grip the sticks with your thumbs and fingers? Posted this in the 3d forum as well, to get as much input as possible.

Thumbs or thumbs and fingertips
I think its just a matter of preference. I know guys that do both and are top notch pilots. I prefer just the thumb. I've been practicing on the simulator with the Thumb and Finger, but it just isn't comfortable for me........yet, I'm bound and determined to get it. Maybe it is better, we'll see.

Definitely thumbs AND fingers... i feel like i have no control with just thumbs. The fingers really make me smooth and give me better control on fine movements.
I go with or without a neckstrap. Without on my simple 4 chan. radio... with strap on radios with D/R, mixing, etc.. where i need to reach for switches.

Thumbs or thumbs and fingertips
I flew for 18 years thumbs only and then 5 years with thumb and finger plus tray. The reason for the switch, I was having trouble learning to hover smoothly. For me, hovering and then learning to torque roll was so much easier with thumb/finger and a tray. It did take awhile to get comfortable flying the many aerobatic manuevers, almost like learning everything over again. I'll never go back to thumbs only.

I am a "thumb" flyer, but think that thumb and forefinger should yield more precise, fine motor, control. I am practicing on G2, but my buddy box doesn't have length adjustable sticks. I think I need a longer sticks for thumb and forefinger...
Cheers!

thumb and figertip for me. The man that instructed me was adamant on that point, said if I only wanted to use thumbs find another instructor. Outside of that he was easy going as they get.

Just thumbs for me... No neck strap.... I've been wanting to try adding a little finger tip action in there.... I saw one of the best pilots at our field using both thumb and forefinger. I'll try it on the sim first.

Thumbs or thumbs and fingertips
So far I have been mostly just thumbs, but like others, play on the sim with thumbs/fingers. I flew with both on a cold day at our field wearing gloves, and was comfortable, but the next week, without the gloves, couldnt do it to save my life. I am trying to make the change, but always revert back.
I do use a neck strap, and found that makes a large improvement in stability, but I'm also one of those body english fliers, who leans and gyrates around while flying, as if thats going to help me .
Keep the inputs coming, this is great to hear how the other guys do it.

I pinch the sticks and use a neckstrap. I learned that while flying helicopters. (You need an extra finger or two to work the switches) I started that habit and never quit.

Thumbs or thumbs and fingertips
I use to be thumbs, but this pass year I forced myself to learn the thumb and finger method. And now I like it much better. Gives you much more precise control in independent axis' I still use thumb in certain situations, so I can do both. But I now prefer the thumb and finger. Seems like, not all, but most of the best pilots fly like this. That should be some indication.

Thumb and fore finger for me! Learned that way and made a lot of sense. I tried thumbs before and for me at least you just can't "feel" the aircraft the way you can using your thumb and finger. I don't think a full scale pilot would crawl into a cockpit with a joystick and place his whole palm over the joystick! Gotta GRAB those controls!

both!
I have always flown thumbs only banging the corners. Getting a heli has changed that. I now fly the heli and pattern type planes with thumb and forefinger in a TX tray. My funflies, I fly with a strap and depends on the maneuver I'm doing whether I use my forefingers or not. The wild stuff I use only thumbs, hovering and other precision stuff I use both.

Dont get me wrong they are both good fliers, point was it really doesnt matter how you do it. I used to be thumbs only mode 2, then went to thumb/fingers/tray, then went to thumbs/fingers/neckstrap no tray, then I moved on to Mode 3, with thumbs/fingers/neckstrap. The last combo is what I found gave me the best advantage, that is really what it boils down to.
I would be surprised if CPLR doesnt win another year, he is still winding up. It was only in August that he was the first ever to win every single round in the F3A Worlds. He is going to be tough to beat for a while. Although it would be nice if someone at least took a round from him every once and a while!!
