Ailerons-flaps on Sig Something Extra. Help
 

Hey. I'm new here. And also into flying. I've built planes but just started flying. I'm currently building a SE and just got it covered. I'm putting in the servo's etc. And i'm wondering how you're suppose to hook up the 2 ailerons or flaps? How are they used in flight? Because they are 2 seperate servos, running on different channels. say 1 and 6. I have a futaba 6 ch. not the computer one but the step down radio. Please help. thanks in advance

You'll find that they will work naturally like ailerons, that is, go in different directions because the servo arms are pointing in opposite directions, and even though the servos revolve in the same direction, the result is opposite movement of the control horns.

Flaps, however, can only be applied (that is, move the control surfaces in the same direction) using the mixing abilities of the transmitter.

I'm afraid you will not be able to do it without a transmitter that gives you flap ability.

All this having been said, you don't really need flaps on an SE as they land extremely slowly already!

What I will say though, is you must not allow the full travel of the ailerons; certainly not for the first few flights, or you will screw the model into the ground! SEs roll faster than you can follow, and inexperience will almost certainly end up hitting that flat hard thing called the ground!

Good luck. The Somethin' Extra is about the best plane you could hope for, to learn aerobatics, and yet the wing section lets you land at ridiculously slow speeds!

thanks for the quick reply. I still don't undertand though. I have 6 channels. my right stick will be used for one of the servos on the ailerons and then there is a dial top right for the other. Kinda hard to operate that dial on the top right. :().

currently i'm flying a pt40 w/0 ailerons. i've flown 4 times with my trainer and taken off and landed successfully 8 times by myself. He said that i'm the fastest person he's ever trained before. I"m excited... just wishing we had better weather now.. kinda picked a bad time of the yr. to start. i'll make ski's. hahahha

i also have a sig hog bipe, cermark sukhio 26, and a super sport 60.

Does your radio have a knob on it? If so, you turn the knob one way they go up, and the other way they go down. In the center should be neutral.

yeah it has a dial. but the dial would just run one servo. there is 2 servos running the ailerons. so the dial would run one aileron and the right stick run the other aileron?

or do u splice the 2 servos that run the ailerons and have that run by either the knob for flaps or stick for ailerons?

Iowa if you have the 6VA skysport it is capable of mixing channel 1 and 6 to work as "normal" ail according to what i just read on futaba's on line manual. if you don't have the book go to futaba's web site and look up the manual on line. I haven't used anything but computer radios in years, sorry that's the best help i can offer.

BTW once set up "mixed" the right stick will work both servos, it almost sounds like you were using the knob to control one of the ailerons.

I hate to say this but your radio will not do what you want. The best you can do is hook up the 2 ail servos on a "Y" harness and plug them both into channel 1. You will need a "reversing Y" unless you set the control arm or servo on one ail opposite of the other, in other words one horn will point too the fuse the other will point to the wing tip or one servo out put shaft will be closer to the leading edge the other the trailing edge, expect some differential either way. Your SE will fly just fine set up like this; you just won't have the frills like flaps, flaperons and such. Save up for a computer radio:D

Wait, wait. Both servo arms will point either in towards the fuse, or out to the wing tip. They must (and will naturally) point opposite directions. No reversing Y required for ailerons, standard Y Harness is all you need. Just install the wing servos as per the SE Instructions (I've only done 3 of these) and hook the servos into a standard "Y" harness. Plug it into channel 1 and watch the magic.

Don't make a big deal about this for now. We flew for decades without computer radios. Now I'm not saying I'd give mine up now that I'm used to it, but you will do fine without a fancy radio for now. But as stated above, start saveing. Once you get one, you'll wonder why you didn't get one at birth!

Also, let me agree with david. USE YOUR DUAL RATES. Set them exactly as the manual states. When you can fly it all day without problems, you can get sassy. If you set the high Rate to get the most throw possable, the SE will roll so fast you'll have no idea which side is up when you stop! Fun if you expect it, but beware!
