Lithium in profiles
so has anybody used a lithium ploymer or Lion battery with voltage regulator to power their radio equipment in the profiles ? Should shave some nice weight off and would give you tons of flights on a single charge. You can probably fly the whole weekend. Might try it in the EF Edge.
Might use a Lithium Ion pack from www.fromeco.org . Will use these batteries also in my new composite arf yak. |

Shortman bought some Lipos for his RX on his TopCap...of course he has never flown it, so who knows hao it worked.
I used the original Duralites for quite a while, a 1600 Mah pack was like a 500 mah Nicad size-wise. |

Yep! I am, I am using the latest 12C Thunderpower 1320 2S Lithium Polymer pack with a Smart Fly 6V regulator and the Smart Fly Superswitch. I have tested the battery and have kept the system on trimming out and programming for over 2-3 hours and it shows 8.0v, so I used .4V in 2-3 hours of just sitting tweaking the plane :D.
Fromeco regulators ARE HEAVY, 2 ounces each and big. The Smart Fly regulators are more then enough and weigh .5 ounces, nice small and compact and I even placed mine under the trailing edge sheeting in my Topcap. BTW, I should have the maiden this weekend and can report more information on how it performs. I can already tell the difference in speed and holding power that the standard servos lacked before. I just got to go buy a new pull pull system and im done[8D] |

yep, the fromeco regulators are heavier then normal regulators but that shouldn't affect the big planes. On the smaller that might be the case. I might try a 1200 lipoly pack on the Edge then too. Probably have it flown and tested before shortman has his report in (and I havn't even unpacked the Edge box) :):D

Hey Guys,
The RX voltage answer is to easy! Simply put one of the inexpensive ESC between the battery and the RX, leave the motor pigtail hanging! Make sure it is a Li Poly rated speed contro. This way you can move it over to your electric park flyer next weekend. As to the TX most of them will handle 12 volts so plug in three cells. But why the bother, if a NiMh AA pencell can give you 2400 mah why bother with Lithiums?? Simple charge using existing equipment, light weight, more reliable construction, etc etc. JB |

That's what I'm planning to do for Nashville, I just don't have enough time in to take too many days off just now. I'm still shooting for Tulsa, Texarkana, and Nashville. I figure they'll be ready to fire mee by then!

Ulf, I am running a two cell Etec 700 mah pack on my profile. I have two 6 amp. rectifier diodes in series with the receiver to drop the voltage and still charge the pack without unhooking anything. Each diode drops the voltage about .8 VDC, so when the lipo is hot off the charger (about 8.3 V) the receiver and servos see about 6.7 VDC. This voltage will drop as you discharge the batteries not like a regulator. I haven't found any other method of making it lighter than this. If you use lipos and a regulator, you will come out a little over the weight of a 700mah nimh pack. DON'T use an esc from electric. The escs have up to about 1 amp output for the servos. If you run 4 standard size servos on an esc, you will torch the chip and lose your plane. The HS85MG's can draw about 1.5A when stalled, the HS225's about 2A. If you add this up, you need at least 6A capability. BTW did you ever make it to Beal Street? John Byrne (JC) |
