Servo strength for TopCap
Just finished assembling my TopCap with 70 Surpass and Futaba 3001 servos. While adjusting throws I noticed that its very easy to 'stall' the servos for the elevator and rudder. I'm using Dubro super strength servo arms to get large throws at the surface, but I'm wondering if my 3001's are going to be enough? On low rates, when I move the elevator or rudder, I can easily stop the motion by holding the surface. What will happen in the air under load? Do I need to invest in some higher torque servos?

I am using standard JR 517's and have no problems. Do your pull pull cables work freely or do they bind? There was talk on another post about binding cables and running them on the outside in a couple of screw eye's.

I'm using 3003's on everthing on mine. I think I should upgrade the rudder servo but the rest are fine. Im runnin a saito 91with a 14/6 and the only time I run over 1/2 throttle is when I want to go straight up fast. You will will love this plane. I set mine up max throws and dialed in -50% expo. I Just leave it on high rates , no need to use low rates with the expo . I also set mine for 40% spoilers not flaps.
I can get her down in a hurry if I want ....kinda fun. :D John |
servo torque
In the newest tower talk that I have they show the 3001 as having only 33.3 oz.in with 4.8 battery and 41.6 oz.in with 6.0 battery. If theses numbers are right they aren't enough for an fun fly plane. I run 6 volt packs in most of my funfly stuff. Have 1 magic with 148's servos and 4 cell battery and if it has much speed it doesn't preform well until it bleeds off some speed. It is stalling out the servos.

I use standard JR's 42 Oz-in works fine.

Hitec servos all around on mine. 525s on ailerons, 545 on elevator, 545MG on rudder and a 422 on throttle.
The ailerons are a little too fast - I have to run 65% expo on high rates to keep it from over-rotating when I roll it. |

What about 422s all the way around? They worked well on my Ultra Stick.

I have a YS 63 w/ 14x4 prop.
I now have JR 517 Standard BB on everything except elevator. Elevator I have a Hitec 225BB mini. Works great. I had a Hitec 225 bb mini on my rudder until it stripped in flight. I replaced w/ a Standard BBJr 517. So far its works great. So i don't recommend the 225bb on the rudder. I don't fly the plane that much anymore. But the Hitec 225BB on evelator has over 40 flights on it so far and i haven't had a problem yet. |

How long did your 225BB last before it stripped? I'm concerned about the longevity of these servos. I've heard they're not so tough. No surprise given the size, weight, and power combination.

I got a around 6 flights or less w/ my 225BB plastic gears on my rudder, before it stripped. I also had a YS 63 on it so I had way to much power on the plane, that might have been a cause of it.
I was doing alot of knife edging, and that is what got the servo. |
