First flight Tufflight 4d
 

I have flow my Tufflight now about 6-7 flights and am not impressed with the way it flies. My plane before this was a Morris the Knife which was stable in the air and had great harrier capabilities. The 4d was very mushy in the air. It wasn't as precise and didn't do the harrieers as nice. It did do some pretty good 3d manuvers, but I didn't feel I had as much control of the plane as I did with the Knife. I checked the CG and even tried adding a few ounces to the nose and still didn't like it. Is there anyone else out there with the same experience with this plane.

Well I think I found out what my problem is. I double checked the CG and it was off by1-1/8" too far back. I guess I mismeasured. I had put a 5 cell pack in it and I guess I installed it too far back to balance a mvvs .49 as the engine is already as far forward as it can go. I think I'm going to buy a saito 82 instead of adding lead to the front.

Nice color scheme Poof. So you were flying with your CG at 6 1/8 inches back from the LE? Where was the CG after you added the weight?

my 4D is almost done and I have a mag 70 four stroke I am sure that if I cg it right it will fly as well as any other out there.actually only saw one plane that was non impressive the 3D magic was blah!

The Saito 82 is 16 oz. w/ no muffler and the Mvvs .49 is 13.4 w/no muffler

Well I added some lead to the front and the plane flies great. I was able to do some 3d maneuvers that I couldn't do before. I did my first waterfall. We had a steady breeze at our field and I was able to harrier it straight down to the ground real gentle. I am now happy with my purchase.

My CG is now about 5-1/8" from LE

the 82 muffler weights a couple ounces the 49 muffler weighs around 5.5 ounces all up the 82 is lighter i have a few of each engine

It's amazing you were flying it with the CG that far back. I know it's possible, but you'd be "stuck" in a harrier all the time. It's obvious you had previous profile experience. Most guys would just say "it's too twitchy" on the elevator.

Be sure to check your ailerons so they will not be in a "flap" mode. If you can adust on your "TX" then do that. That's the most common problem among guys who say their plane is "mushy" all the time when the CG is at 5". It would actually do better harriers inverted when the ailerons are pointed down slightly like "flaps", but upright flight isn't very crisp.

When the cg was back at 6 1/8" it was in a harrier pretty much the whole time, but We had 15-20 mph winds the day of the first flight with gusts of probably 30mph so I couldn't tell for sure what was natural for the plane.

I set up my flap switch so the ailerons are either straight out from the wing or when the switch is flipped they go up just slightly and so far I like it. I'm probably going to experiment a little more before I settle on the CG and aileron setup.

I crashed it into a bunch of bushes along our fields edge and nothing happened to the plane. Its funny people get scared when you do 3d maneuvers close to the ground. Especially when they think the wing is made of balsa.[sm=tongue.gif]

What are your thoughts....an OS .46fx or a Saito .72....

I took out my MVVS.49 do to problems with the engine and bought a Saito .82 which is the same weight as the .72 and it has fixed my CG problem. I mounted it in the same holes as the MVVS. It will hover at about 1/3 throttle. Lo9ve the motor......and sound.

What Prop are you using with your .82. I've got the MAS 13x5 and a 13x6 scimitar to try.

That's too small for the 82. I have Pro Zinger 15x4 for out-of-the-world acceleration. For a more scratch-proof operation, use APC 14x4W.

The idea is durabilty which Master Airscrew has a little bit more of when compared to APC or Zinger. Since the 4D itself is a little bit more durable than the average funfly we are trying to match up a durable prop. I do wish MAS would make more dedicated FF props in the 14x4, 15x4 sizes, etc.
