Magic Extra
What is there to say about the Magic Extra with a magnem 52. I dont know anything about that motor but a local hobby shop has a special with that combo and I have been wanting to get that plane. Is this combo going to give me a great power to weight ratio? and is that motor reliable?

RE: Magic Extra
Magic Extra looks good but sucks for hardcore 3D. It makes a good sport plane with 3D potential if you have good thumbs. It has sucky rudder authority.
That being said Id like to have another one, just dont buy it thinking its a 3D monster. Ive flown a Twist with a magnum .52 that ran well.....it did have the carb changed an a different muffler though:D Powerful little engine though. |
RE: Magic Extra
There is a review here on RCU on page 5 in the magazine done by Minnflyer. I got a chance to fly that paticular plane. It handled very nicely. With the Magnum 52 on it it had more than enough power to hover at just a tick over 1/2 stick. The amazing thing that sticks out in my mind about that engine is that it was the quietest thing I had ever heard. And it ran great. You might want to ask Minnflyer how the engine is running now two years later. I know that the plane didn't make too much past the review, as the elevator servo lead came unplugged during it's last flight.

RE: Magic Extra
The Magnum52 engine is a cheap poorly made product the carb is almost impossible to adjust to get good midrange low end and top end the transition sucks for 3-D its not a bad engine for power at full throttle but like I said its almost impossible to get properly adjusted for any type of 3-D performance.
The Magic is not a bad performer, the Magic 300 is not very good, both are cheap products, the extra almost always snaps at the fuse where it is thin above the wing, and has very poor rudder authority the elevator is not too bad and it will slow up and Harrier nicely but flat spins and hover are weak... If you want to fly 3-D get a YS 63 and either Extreme flights 540 edge or OMP's Katana or Yak in the 40 size these planes will do anything you are capable of doing and much more!!! The YS 63 is well worth the investmant it has excellent top end performance, killer transition and low end power it spins a 13/6 perfectly and its almost trouble free when you get it properly set up... |
RE: Magic Extra
I have the Magic Extra with an OS .50 SX. My fuse did break in half in the middle were it is weak, my engine was still new and I leaned it out just a little to much and just as I took off it shut down on me. It came down a little to hard. I apoxyed it back together and it has been fine since then. There are some people at my club that are using the Magnum .52 that like it very much. I haven't heard any complaints about the engine so far. The Magic Extra is a fine flying plane and will land like a trainer. It's true, It does have some trouble flying 3D. Mine has some coupling in Knife edge and I can't seen to get the balance just rignt to hover very good. If you had a good computer radio you could program some of these bad tendencies out but I don't. Still it's a nice flying plane.

RE: Magic Extra
My Mag 52 runs great, instant transition and it spins...no make that RIPS a 12.25x3.75 APC. It will yank my 4.5lb OMP Kat out of a hover like a bottle rocket.
