RE: Katana 70 V2 - 2 Piece Wing

Darn.
This is the 2nd time this has happened to me.

First time, I ordered the Katana and the next day the price fell down by $30...though Alex was kind enough to refund me $20 :)

Is there any way I can make the same mod to my plane.

PS: I haven't even started putting it together yet.

RE: Katana V2 70 - 2 Piece Wing

There will be no way to mod your plane for this design. This is a complete redesign on the fuse, and both wings to accommodate the carbon fiber wing tube. Also a few other improvement mods as well.

Is it going to be the same price? It looks so much better with the transparent also
what is the estimated release date? I could sell the one i currently have :-D

why did i have to order that katana 70 2 days ago.

RE: Katana V2 70 - 2 Piece Wing

We don't have exact date as of right now, perhaps 6 weeks.

It will be fairly priced, but we don't have exact prices yet. I would not worry too much about that. It will be in the market range.

RE: Katana V2 70 - 2 Piece Wing

Can you give us a list of the expected mods to improve the structure. When i asked how much it would cost i wanted to try and compare it to the current model. Is accel hobby going to be producing this one or is it individually OMP?

RE: Katana V2 70 - 2 Piece Wing

No, this is not an Accel model. I will have the complete list of all features very soon. We have the final samples in Dayton now and will be going over them with fine tooth comb to make sure quality is top notch, then provide you all the data. As of right now they are looking very good.

Looks like it's built by the same factory that did the first ones with the wing cartridge.

Hence the name "V2".

The Katanas are factory planes, owned by the factory, not the distributors.

Is the fuselage foam core or just balsa wood?
I holpe is foam core.( Much stronger )

does this plane come as a kit or arf.

Sorry not foam core, built up the ol' fashioned way.

ARF only

The obvious is the 2 piece wing. That is going to make is much stronger especially since it has CF tube and 2 wings pushing against the fuse making it much more rigid. Mike is going to be building his this week and we'll be flying it with videos just after 4th of July.

The wing was never the problem with the V1 Kat 70. The fuselage was. It would almost crack somewhere in a stiff breeze (yes a slight exageration) but they cracked very easily especially around the tail empanage. What has been done to beef up the fuselage beyond the wing joint

RE: Katana V2 70 - 2 Piece Wing

The entire fuselage of the Katana V2 70 has main full beams running down it's entirety, top, middle and bottom. Also bear to mind that the entire fuse is fully sheeted which will add extra strength when tying the back of the fuse to the middle of the fuse to the front of the fuse. When you take sheeting and run it on the fuse with the grain against the point of stress, you have increased a major amount of strength. Especially when you add beams and cross bracing underneath it to tie it all in.

I'll see of the factory can get me a photo of the fuse without balsa.

Either way it will be very strong and will be fully capable of high speed blenders or anything you want to throw at it. We'll be shooting videos next week and putting it through a Forrest Pilkenton stress test.

I think this is what Dion is trying to say. The wing cartridge was a rather funny idea on the first version in my opinion. I don't know about the rest of the fuselage though.

Spacey, you are so talented with the graphics! I must say so far I'm pretty impressed with the samples we have received. Looks to be a very solid airframe built in some ways similar to the 65 Yak with wing tube and mounting tab assembly. Fairly strong fuse as well but built up and not foam. Hardware looks decent and covering is awesome. Of course since I've been fired as the OMP test pilot, young Forrest will be wringing this plane out this weekend. :D.......hey Forrest, pass me that transmitter!

What improvements would you suggest making to stiffen up the fuselage so it doesent crack under strees. I just got a backup and was thinking of fiberglassing the back and sanding it down.

I'd say the best way to keep the fuse from cracking is to keep it away from tera firma...... :):)

If your talking about the Accel model I don't know, nor does Mike. We've neither carried or owned those planes. Prolly best to ask Quicker on Pro Bro site or call Accel to see if they have suggestions.

Well the accel models...arent they from the exact same factory OMP uses?

We were originally under the assumption they were produced in same factory as the Katanas, but later found out they are not. Either way the Katana ARF models, all of them, even the electrics are owned by the factory. We are the distributors of these models as are many other companies under different brand labels around the world. Now of course when it comes to the OMP models, we own the designs of the models.

So when it comes to a particular model that we do not carry (I.E. the Katana 70 GS) we cannot support it and we don't want to give you the wrong information especially without owning the particular model personally. I don't mean to brush you off because I know you're a good customer, it's just that is not our plane in any way, shape or form. There are a bunch of these models out there, I'd suggest just starting a new thread.

I have something I could suggest that you could perhaps try. Go over to Towerhobbies and find some carbon fibre rovings. They have it branded under Dave Brown products. If you don't have some of this stuff already Tower's price on it is ok and convenient to get a hold of. Otherwise you can definitely find it cheaper at composite shops and so on and they sell it in 6k and 12k strands. Get a hold of some 12k and pop me a pm. I'll explain to you how to apply it. Really easy to work with and a quick fix to stiffen up that fuz. A couple of beads of this stuff and it should become very strong. Trust me, we've stress tested the stuff extensively. Just gimme a pm when you get a hold of it so we don't take this thread off topic.
