Hinge slots: When?

Hello!
I would ask to you teachers:
in a normal profile plane, like those OMP or Swany ones, when is the right moment to do the CA hinge "slots" on the tristocks?
Is better to do them BEFORE covering, and then after covering I will cut the plastic cover and find the before made slots, then enlarge a littlle the area of covering around the slots, and finally glue the hinges?
Or are you used and think better to do all AFTER covering?
Thankyou and CIAO
Paolo

RE: Hinge slots: When?

I have much better luck cutting the slots before covering than cutting the slots after covering. I generally trim my covering to the trailing edge when I start. (I also start covering the bottom of the wing first) By doing it this way, I can locate the slots through the covering and not take a chance of messing up a nice covering job with the slip of the hand or a slip of the slot cover.

I would also like to compare notes with some of you other covering pros to see if my thinking is similar to yours.

I do mine after covering. I usually lay the piece that is covered over the blueprints to see where the hinges go. Mark with a pen, Cut the slots. I hate hunting for them after you have covered the plane........just my .02

After covering, I take a Xacto Knife and cut a little slot in the covering then use a slot cutter to make the hole. I usually mahe the slot in the covering a little bigger so the CA soaks into the wood good.

RE: Hinge slots: When?

Ok, you right perhaps do it after covring is a cleaner job...
But make it before covering was also better because was still possible to do some modifications to the line of the tristock trailing edge for prfect fit the parts, or so. When the pieces are covered nothing more can be done......

Anyway mine real problem is another one:
I am finishing the beautiful Mojo 60, but I have not well calculated the dimensions of the plane.. and now I am sure of it:
IT WILL NOT FIT IM MY CAR!!!!!!!!!![:o]
What can I do??????[&o]

Get a bigger car? Or maybe just roll the back windows down!

I got an even better idea. Give it to me... I have a full size van... It'll fit in there

I thought that the wing was separable from the fuse. Anyway I have the .40 too...
BUT THE .60 IS REALLY A BIG BAD BOY!!
But my car is so little....
I will find a friend's car for sure......

Here in Italy everything is little and... very expensive!!!!!![:o]

Do you think that I can block the model above the car, in his top, and go to the fly field? About 20 km far.....?[&o]

If you are talking about on top of that little car it might take off. You might start your engine before you leave and if it does you can just fly to the field. Just keep yuor TX handy.:D

Sorry kind of a dumb joke.

Awwww... How cute! a 1/2A car!!! :D

Here's what I did when I was in Japan, and drove a tiny car... I tied cotton clothesline from the handles(or coat hooks) on each side running across and in an "x" on the inside roof of the car, and hung my planes upside down from the ropes. Some planes actually had the wings sticking out through the windows a few inches. Got quite a few odd looks on the way to the field... [&:]

Grrrrrrrrr [:@]
I don't live in Lilliput!!!!

Anyway I solved all the problems:
When make hinge slots?
I will do that directly at the fly field, perhaps attach the fuse too will done there....
Then crash the plane at the third flight.....
so not have the problem for the way back.....

We Italian are too intelligent!!!!;)
