So TopCap or Sledge?
I've decided I want to build a morris profile. I really like the looks of these two planes and have heard astounding things about both of them from you guys. So now the only question is, which one? I love to hover, and I'd really like to start doing more waterfalls, 3D etc. Any recommendations or is it the same either way?

So TopCap or Sledge?
If your building the plane I would go w/ the sledge. right now its probably the hottest little profile on the market. I saw the designer Jeff Williams fly it this weekend at the Profile Brotherhood flyin. Its no doubt that is a great flying plane. but Jeff is definately a better pilot than I am.
I own the top cap ARF. I am not that happy w/ it. its a Pig compaired to the kit built sledge. Mine weight 5.5lbs. Were jeff said his Sledge weighted in at 4.1lbs. He does the sweetest elevator w/ his sledge. |
Engine
Thanks for the reply! What engine did he have on his Sledge? It sounds nice.

So TopCap or Sledge?
rplumbo, I run the MVVS 49 with a zinger 11 X 4 wood prop and the MVVS pipe they sell with it. It is all stock, no mods to that plane or engine. If you need to decide between the sledge or the top cap, well I will not say because you know my opinion. But you will have plenty of people on this forum to help. Try wgeffon on here, he has both planes built from kits. Also, I started on the video for Morris today. It will have many 3D maneuvers with descriptions, a session devoted to how to do it and airplane setup and it will be available thru Morris just as their other videos are available. Even it any of you do not own a sledge it should be helpful in learning 3D maneuvers and how to do them. Jeff Williams

4 strokes?
What about 4 stroke engines? I've got a couple of them now, and I absolutely love them. Will I be able to get the same performance you get with an MVVS 49 with a 4c? Say a Saito 72, or OS 70?
Thanks! Reid |

Sledge....
I have never built a Morris profile before, so can't comment on the Top Cap, but I feel the Sledge was a pretty dang easy to build plane. I would hate to build it (or from what I gather about Morris planes in general, any Morris profile) without my trusty disk/belt sander combo. There are about a jillion miter joints in it, and I can whip them out fast with the disk sander. I can't imagine building it without a disk sander, good joints are an obsession with me.. My $.02.
I have just finished the airframe on mine, hope to get it covered soon. I'm going with a 4 stroke..I am going in a completely opposite direction than what is normal for me, I have never powered a fun fly plane with a 4 stroke before. |
Sledge!
Out of your two choices stated, Sledge! I've flown both. The Sledge is more capable over the Top Cap. The construction manual is far superior on the Sledge as well. As far as engines? - I stick by the Webra 50 over all the others.
My 2 cents! Kevin :D |
So TopCap or Sledge?
The Sledge and the Top Cap both suck.........Dont get either of them. Buy a Easy Sport .40 and put a OS .40 LA in it..........
Ok. I am done smoking wacky tobaccy.... I absolutely love both the Top Cap and the Sledge. I am a big fan of the Saito .72 in them. I think the Sledge does a little better in High Alpa (true 3D) but in no way is the Top Cap a bad 3D'er. If your just getting into 3D you wont be able to notice the little differences and nuances of each plane. My vote is for either with the Sledge winning out on overall performance. BTW, thats my Sledge in my Avatar. Its really solid on hovers |
