OMP .40 Edge ARF Build Thread!

1 Attachment(s)
Well I've been reading the threads and after seeing some good ones and some not so good ones about this plane when they always seem to that they turn out to be happy in the end. I can see that OMP takes care of their customers and thats why I'm getting one of my own. I think OMP is a good company, but i havent actually had one of 'their own' planes yet. i had the Accel Katana and it's a great plane and all, but it's not an OMP plane.

DION OR MIKE, IF YOU'RE READING THIS: HURRY UP AND SHIP IT PLEASE! I WON'T BE ABLE TO SLEEP TILL I GET'S HERE! SAITO 72 NEEDS A HOME!!

Anxious,
Scott

katanas are good, till they meet trees at 60 mph

WOW!!!! It hasn't even been an HOUR and i got my tracking number already!!! and it's 9 oclock at night!! Maybe i will be able to sleep tonight, and dream of trimming leaves off the trees with this thing at the field...

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF on the way!

Just thought i would make a list of the stuff im going to be using

Engine: Saito 72
Servos: All standard futabas, but a 645MG hitec on rudder
Radio: Futaba 9CAPS

And, i read that the hinges arent pre slotted, and i really like this, because i have been waiting to use the mini robart hinges on a plane. Yay! The robarts seem to give me alot more confidence then CA hinges.

I am going to put the throttle servo up behind the engine, because i want to keep the linkages short, i had one get stuck on the katana and was stuck at full throttle, that was fun.

Any prop recommendations on the 72?

Waiting,
Scott

The APC 13x4W seems to be popular for the 72 on profiles.

My os 70 will turn a 14x4 well on 15% at 500 ft above sea level. I just recieved my edge I also had a Katana that crashed due to a locked up Rudder servo. BTW I will never buy 3151 digitals I have had 3 break gears,1 rudder,2 aileron. I flat spun it to the ground but it the fuse broke in half pretty bad. I'm excited about the edge I'm going to put about the same gear in mine, only differences will be a saito 82 or YS 63, and a 3010 on rudder. I may also put a mini servo on the throttle, depends on balance.

Dion or Mike... What do ya'll perfer for assembly epoxy or probond/gorilla glue?
Thanks Dylan

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF on the way!

My edge came yesterday already! geez, 2 days!! Arrived in PERFECT shape, not a wrinkle, not a ding! And the trim scheme is awesome, i think when im flying it, ill think im flying the 92" Hybrid or somthin cuz it's got the same scheme

I wish i could start working on it, but i have to leave for an IMAC competition, so i should be able to get started on monday night.

I will have pics and a mini build thread too, followed by video of the maiden and wringing it out.

Ill post pics when i get back on sunday night,

Wish me luck!
Scott

Scott, You'll love it! I have had mine for about a month now. GREAT PLANE! It has held up to everything I can throw at it and then some. Mike talked me in to using "Gorilla" glue (I used a off brand) Works great. Much stronger and lighter than epoxy IMO. An added plus is that when dry the excess will "flake" off the covering. Slide your wing in past where it will be, run a small bead along the wing/fuse. Then pull it back thru (again farther than it will finaly be) do the same thing and then make your final adjustments. Enjoy it and fly it like you hate it!:D

Yes, I like gorilla glue the best. It doesn't take much if you spread a thin coat when sheeting and spray the other side with water. When doing sheeting on fuselages you of course need to put boards and weights on top to press everything in place. When building the ARFs and gluing the wings in you can also use the gorilla glue and what's nice is you can pick the escess off the monokote after it cures. You do have to make sure the wing is square, straight, etc. and secure in place until the glue cures.

Well i'm back from the IMAC competition, and didnt really do that great...

But i brought home a nice Saito 72, and we can start working on the edge tonight maybe, if my dad's up to it.

I still have to get those robart hinges, otherwise i think i have everything we need.

If we start building tonight, i will have some pics of the build.

OK...I have to ask.... why were you flying the Katana at 60mph??

Its 3D for goodness sake;):D

Not pylon;)

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF on the way!

battery came unplugged and it went to full throttle, and it went up, cuz it was going out of hover when batt unplugged, and was going down on a 45 at full throttle, yawing to the right (where trees were)

but it made an AWESOME sound! sounded like a bomb went off in the forest:D

I shouldn't admit it.............. But I know that sound[8D][:@]:D Mine wasn't at 60MPH though! Dang that had to be loud! LOL
Enjoy the Edge.

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF on the way!

to give an idea of how loud it was, it sounded like a gunshot, pretty close to ya, and there was a long echo, had to have been like 4 echos

I really want to get started on this, but i had orientation tonight for high school, tomorrow hopefully i can get a litte bit done.

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF on the way!

Well I flew my Edge today. Impressive, very impressive. CG at 1-7/8" with a saito 82,14x4W apc, 1200 nimh 6V, standard servos accept HS81 on throttle and 3010 on rudder, 3" foam wheels, sullivan tail wheel.

I only got in 2 flights but it was the best maiden I've had yet. Only bad habit I noticed was in an elevator it seemed to wing rock a little. Harriers, and some short hovering was simple.

Construction of the fuse was much better than the accel Katana, The wing was not as well built as the Katana.

AFSalmon 08-29-2005 07:54 AM

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF on the way!

If your Edge wing rocks then something is definately set up wrong. The Edge is rediculously stable pretty much at any attitude. You can do harrier circles dragging the tail on the ground with no fear of rocking or snapping out. Check your lateral balance and make sure the plane flys with little to no down elevator when inverted.

got a little work done tonight, i went over all the covering with an iron and the heat gun just to tighten everything up, and we have the hinges cut. And we cut the covering on the wing and stab where the fuse gets glued.

Hey!!!

is it me or is this thing starting to look like an airplane??

We are using the tailwheel from the katana, mainly cuz the ground round here is kinda soft, and the skid would make it too hard to taxi, if i taxi at all lol

Also, used the landing gear from the katana, cuz they are the same thing lol, we just had em drilled already, to save time.

We got the wing on, and the surfaces attatched. I like how they tell you to move the surface to the max throw you want to set the gap, somthing i would forget to do unless it was in there.

When we slid the wing in, the balsa sheeting around the cut out for the wing separated from the foam, so some foamy CA and some foamy accelerator and it's fixed.

so all that's left is rx/battery, servos, fuel tank, nd motor

hope to finish by end of this week.

Will be using a 2000 mah 6V battery.

um, if im forgetting anything, let me know

And what do you think Mr. Mike? how'm i doin? [8D]

RE: OMP .40 Edge ARF Build Thread!

:D:DYay!! It's moving!!!

well, the tail is anyway. We got the elevator and rudder servos in, and tested em out, set up the throws and what not in the 9C, and wow. I am getting about 60 to 70 degrees of elevator, woah!

We also have the aileron servos installed, but we dont have the linkages or control horns with the ailerons yet. We are choosing to put the throttle servo inside the wing instead, becuase we got a heavy engine on the front, so wanna keep it tailheavy without adding weight.

We're gettin there![8D]:D:D:D:D[8D]:D
