Servo choice for Morris the Knife
I started the ARF tonight and can't wait to get it in the air. My question is about the servos for the elevator and rudder. Both are on Pull-Pull and a BB servo is recommended. I have two good Futaba 148's that I added top bearings to. Can I use these or go with the Dual bearing Hitec 425's. Thank's in advance. Pete

Any standard servo will work. Obviously, BB would be the better choice but I run almost all of mine on the Airtronics 94102Z and they are not BB and work fine. They are just recommending the best choice, not a "what would work" scenario. Jeff Williams

Thanks,
They implied that the non bearing servo will wear out sooner and fail. The 148's had only brief use in a prior plane :( and asked for a new home.... Pete |

Pete, that is true in most cases. However, the Airtronics standard (94102Z) is the most rugged standard I have seen. Plus, it puts out the most torque for a standard. Most other brands are around 43oz give or take and Airtronics is 50oz on 4.8v. The 148 will be fine. Jeff W.

I'm using Hitec 425s on the r/e of mine, but I've flown a friends with faster 605s... I may swap...

Just finished one.
I had some Futaba 9102 laying around and used them for the ailerons. used I had installed hitec 425's on the rudder and elevator originally but decided to change. one of them to me is a little suspect so I decided to remove it. when I went to the store for a new servo I ended up walking out with two 625 MG's for the elevator and rudder. all the control serfaces move super fast and super smooth. probably a little over kill here but not much weight added so... finished weight came to 4lb 8oz with mousse exhaust . I haven't flow it yet though. It's going to hang in the local hobby shop for the winter so I have more room to build. |

Bugsiegel,
Nice plane I bet plenty of people will salivate and try to buy it. I thought of the 625's since I had them lying around too but, thought that was overkill for this plane. I'm using an OS46SF with a MAC muffler and a 12.25x3.75 APC prop. Pete |

Bugs, nice color scheme. I especially like they way you did your canopy area and aft. It really takes the dull look away from the knife that they have with the standard design.
Where'd you get the idea? |

Hitec 225MG's!
Weight: 1.09 oz (31 g) Torque: 4.8VDC: 55 oz-in. (3.9 kg-cm) 6.0VDC: 67 oz-in. (4.8 kg-cm) Speed @ 60 Degrees: 4.8VDC: 0.14 seconds 6.0VDC: 0.11 seconds ...and can be had for less than $30 each. We started with the $22 225BB's, but with KrazyLegs you tend to tip over and catch an aileron now & then and strip the nylon gears (same goes for the rudder with tail touches). These servos together with a 720Mah NiMH 6V pack are magical and save you 4-5 oz. (over standard gear). |
Hidden treasure
I went to pull out the 148's from "The Carcass" and found two Expert SL517 High torque,BB servos. Better pull and lighter. These will work for now. Pete
