Hey guys this thread is (NOT) a slam on morris hobbies, But just a statement of facts concerning the Sledge 540 kit. A couple of days ago "EXTRANUT" and myself decided we needed a new toy so we picked up 2 Sledge kits and went to work together on them. We thought the price was a little high ($113.00) and after getting started found out that most ALL the 1/4 X1/4 wood was junk and we spent an additional $30.00 to have wood that was'nt either so hard you couldent even cut it or so soft it just crumbled, We really were worried now. Also the motor blocks were the wrong size so we had to shave them down 1/8th in. And where are the decals we have all grown to love from walter??? What is going on here? I have been building and flying Morris profiles from the very first one and have probably had every one they have ever made. We now (3 days later) have ready to go out and try out, But man what a disapointment. Anyone feel the same way? Dave :( :confused:

I'd call them and complain about the wood.

FWIW, I got the first Sledge kit they sold and the wood was fine.

yep i felt the same way. i got one of the first kits and it had missing parts. called morris and they said just go buy some balsa and cut it to work. i put a post up here and jeff williams himself read it and he himself sent me the parts. i don't know what is up morris they don't seem to have as much pride in there product as they use to. jeff did design a good airplane you will enjoy them alot mine is crashed and gone now, did not build another just cause i didnt want to fool with morris and after building the first one i thought the kit was just too high. the omp is where it is at 60.00 for a kit. :D

OMP includes ZERO hardware with the kit. Sledge is complete as far as hardware goes.

And, IMO the sledge is a much better performer. I have flown them both.

SO HAVE I . what hardware do you want the servo's are in the tail. all you need is some rods and some control horns about 20.00 for all the hardware.

Tank, wheels, pull-pull set, control horns, hinges, axles, ALL mounting hardware, nuts bolts, etc.

Its all there except for fuel tubing and foam for the radio equipment.

If you bought a SHORT kit then no hardware or minimal is included.

As far as the issue with the gear combo....... Where is that listed?
What did they say when you asked them about the items you didnt receive?

I will be the first to admit that they have had some customer service issues in the past. But IMO you get the good with the bad and there isnt anything out there ( profile ) that fly's even close to how their profiles do.

So far my kit has been pretty good. i did have a warped leading edge that i decided not to use, but verything else has been good so far. The price is more than i really wanted to spend, but hey, its a sledge, maybe i will think it is cheap if there is any truth to what is being said about how it flys.

Anyone tried the CF landing gear for it?

Where is the gear combo listed? I was unaware that they had anything like that.
And, you should have called them if you didnt get what you were supposed to. Were you charged for all the parts?

Wow where did this post come from?
My Sledge is awesome and a complete Kit...and Flies better than anything i've Flown in a Long time...I think there was a couple sticks messed up in mine too....and Morris was going to replace them but it was much faster and probably cheaper for me to run the the LHS and get a couple Balsa Sticks....the Kit was complete with all hardware tho...Only thing i really replaced and didn't need to was the landing gear...that is cause i wanted the Carbon Fiber Landing Gear.....But Morris has always been Great to me and i will Keep getting there stuff....

Planebender and extranaut, sorry you have experienced some bad wood. It happens to all kit manufacturers but that does not excuse it. I did not see where you called Morris stating this problem and asking for help. If you did not do that, then they cannot help and it is my hope and belief that they would have helped. If you did call/ask for assistance what did they do? I am curious. I designed it but have no control over wood quality or other items they ship to the end user. It is my hope that you can be helped and reinstate your confidence in Morris like mine is. Please email me at [email protected] after you talk to them.

My 2c: All of my wood was of good quality and appropriate density. Actually, I did go find in my scrap box a hard piece of 1/4 triangle stock for the rudderpost to make it as strong as possible.

I did think it was a little strange that the screws for two control horns were not included, but the horns were. According to kit parts listings they were not part of the inventory.

Anyway.......I am really impressed with the design and engineering/assembly of parts. As I am still waiting for my Irvine .53 I can't go into the flying of it, but it just looks like that will be excellent!!!

I wished that Morris would advertise/promote it more. I would not have heard of this design if it weren't for RCUniverse!

GarySS, it will be advertised at some point. Morris knows it needs to be done. This being my first big production design with a recognized company, I am amazed at how much work and time it takes. Respectfully, Jeff Williams.

Question for Wayne (wgeffon)

Nice picture of your fuel line set up. I can't really tell from the picture, but do your fuel lines run all of the way into the wing and then on to the brass tubes? If so, any reason for doing it that way as opposed to outside the wing? Would the lines crack or break in the windstream since they are so long and therefore more flexible? Thanx

I do it that way because its easier to get the tank in. You have a little more flexibility on where the tank goes if the lines are Looser inside the wing.

I have in the past done it with the tubes extending past the LE but after time they rub on the wood and the holes expand.

Jeff! Extranut and myself have compleated our whining process, So now we can get on with the flying and enjoying the sledges. We should post some picts. Hey how can we get 2 pair of the cf gear? These babys are worth it. Thanks for desiging such a cool plane I'll keep it parked next to my 42% when at all flying events. :cool: Remember hovering gains no altitude ;) Bender.....

Maiden Day
 

Plane bender and I are going to maiden the sledges today. We will have some pics and video of these two beauties hovering side by side. How low can you go? I am pretty frustrated with the wood quality we received, but what do you do? We were busy since we framed them in one day. No time to whine, just buy the wood and get the job done. They turned out great, Kirby cut some awesome graphics that make it look even better. If it fly's half as great as it looks Bender and I will be pleased.
