Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Guys,
What is the advantage of the wing tips on a funfly plane? Will is roll better? Will it hover better? Thanks. Regards Marcus |
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
To my knowlege, if you put wing tips on a wing it will slow the roll rate down. Because you will increase the wingspan.
As for hovering, I don't think it will help or hurt hovering. |

I leave 'em off cause they're a pain to cover.... Didn't notice much difference either way...

Wingtips force the vortexes away from the working wing.
IE. more efficient wing, lighter aerodynamic wing loading, and gentler stall characteristics. It also increases surface area which slows roll rate. In calm wind the tips make zero difference in hover. |
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
I put wing tips on an SE several years ago. The roll rate suffered. The plane lands so slow anyway I could not tell the difference. Come to think of it I did the same thing to a 4 Star 40 and the same effect. I cut the wing tips off and the planes rolled faster.

Im building a Gee Bee now and Im going to leave em off of that............John

Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Which Gee Bee are you building. I have the Morris and was considering the same thing.

Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Morris all the way!!!!...Is there another kind?????..John

Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Im making a few other mods as well. Starting with those little elevators........John

Share with us. My fuse is framed up but not glued. I was going to run carbon strips down the side and I was thinking about fiberglassing the three pieces that you glue together that are at the LE where the wing slips through.
|
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Its suspose to be ply at the LE of the wing. I used a jitterbug sander to sand down the ply to make it thinner to reduce weight. I added doublers at the top and bottom of the main frame at the TE of the wing. Everything else will be stock except for bigger elevators and a bigger rudder...............John

Wingtips?
Not to change the subject.............................however,
Wingwiz seems to have the technical answer, I guess, I donno. I have been doing my best to spread the word about them wingtips. On any of the profile or 3D planes, the wingtips seem to slow down the roll rate and make the plane tuck when it rolls. The wingtips do make the plane, more stable. However with these types of plane, the more unstable, the wilder they are, and isn't that the reason we fly them. Tipless: Faster roll rate Tips: More stable |
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Im with you...I dont want stability..I want WILD>.........John

Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
And before someone says something .....I know it isnt scale without the tips but.....I aint going to Top Gun no time soon........John
|
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
I'm going to look at the plans and see much of the wing the tips represent.
|
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Very little......John

Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
As a matter of fact....The ribs are the same as the ones for the knife. With out the tips the wing is pretty much just like the knife wing. I know my knife flys great so the Gee Bee should be perfect without the tips...John

Wingtips on a profile......

Hmmmmm,
Do they slow the roll rate down..... Maybe a bit, but not anything that you would really notice. My Jupiter on high rate ailerons rolls wayyyyyyyy too fast for any kind of counting or otherwise. It has small tips and rounded ailerons. I think if you fly a GWB, you will find that it is not slowed enough to really make a difference. My vote is to put tips on. |

Heres a pic for you Billy. I think it looks good. Im not quite finished with it yet....John

John,
How wide is the fuse? Is it the same as the Knife except for the width and shape of the profile? Don |
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Hey, I'm doing flames on mine as well! Yours are going the wrong way though. Looks great. I'm back in the saddle on mine. Did you put the motor rails in after you glued the fuse together and got it off the board?
|
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
I think I like the look much better with the wing tips... It just doesn't look like a gee bee that way.... Just my opinion.
|
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Hell it dont look like a gee bee no way!!!!!!LOL
Don, Same size. Billy, Yeah I cut out the flames and when your done cutting you have teardrops on the other side of where you are cutting. Just looks different I think. The motor rails go in while on the board before sheeting..........John |
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Your right about that John.... It's a profile right?? That means anything goes....
The flames look pretty cool... Did you use the windex method to stick 'em on? |
Funfly Plane : Wing Tips
Do the drops look that bad? Ya think I should rip it off and do it over?........John
