RE: First Profile - 72" Bipe Build Thread

Heres progress as of tonight. I started on the Horizontal stab / Side stiffiner pieces. Thier about 80% complete right now. All thats left is the actual Stabilizor part of them. The last thing I did tonight was laminate the pieces where the bottom wing joins to the fueselage (thats the big chunk of sitting off to the right). Tomorrow, I'll finish up the side pieces and most of the fues.

Well, I WAS going to wait to post untill I could include some pictures. However, I cant find the cord to hook my camera up to the computer .

Anyway, the fueselage is done with the exception of the carbon fiber and covereing. I'm still looking for some place in town to buy epoxy. All I've been able to find so far is 5min epoxy, and I 'm not even going to think about using that on the carbon fabric.

Time to order covering from Tower :D. I just cant choose between [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHW67&P=7]Metalic Blue[/link] or [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHW43&P=7]Sapphire Blue[/link] [:@] I hate these desicions... Anyone know how many rolls of covering this thing is going to need?

Here's the scheme I'm planning on using.

I'll try to get the pics up as soon as I can.

on the OMP Ultimate....I used maybe 4 rolls of covering total....go with 3 blue, 3 yellow and 2 white.....then you'll probably still have to order more of the blue or yellow......

RE: First Profile - 72" Bipe Build Thread

I went ahead and orderd a 25' roll and an extra 6' roll of both the yellow and blue. For the white I did two 6' rolls. Hopefully that'll be enough.

Ok found the cord for my camera... Heres progress so far.

Pieces laid out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...fuespieces.jpg

Put it together with tape for the picture.. starting to look like somthing....

Here's the shape of the elevators to be.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...l/elevator.jpg

And since I had nothing better to do, I went and got all artistic and stuff..... If you can guess what these are I'll give you a cookie. (Alright obviously I can't... but play along anyway ok?) I'll give you a hint.... these are common plane parts.

First one...

Yes it IS a plane part... just not the way you normaly see it....

Great build so far. Looking forward to more. I think the first pic is a close up of a wheel hub... not sure on the second.

I'm thinking that the second is the piece that goes inside the tank against the rubber part. I could be wrong though!

:D Exactly right, I never thought someone would get that one. The first one is the inside of a wingtube.. looking at a blue light. :)

Sorry, fresh out of boxes large enough to ship it in ;)

Right now I'm waiting on UPS to deliver a large heavy box from tower. It was shipped yesterday so it will be a while before its in.

Well, the wood came in and I started on the control surfaces friday.

On this build I've been using paper templates for all the parts, heres the elevator and rudder.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...tornrudder.jpg

Alright, enough paper, heres some wood. Since the pictures were taken I've sanded a 60degree angle into the elevators.

Next, I'll glue in the plywood where the control horns attach. After that I'll finaly do the carbon fiber and start covering the fueselage.

I love the smell of sawdust...

I would be very careful in testing those servos. I have heard and seen nothing but bad about them.

What have you heard about them? Everything I've seen makes them sound nearly indestructible. Sure they dont perform to advertised specs, but I havent read anything about them failing.

Let me know what size box you'll need, I just happen to have an unlimited source of cardboard.:D

No big update here, just needed a break from sanding [:'(] . While I'm unwinding let me introduce you to the most time consuming part of the project so far.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ool/piece2.jpg

Yes thats it... it's the piece of wood inside the wing which the wingtube goes through. Mine are made of 1/4" aircraft ply. Doesnt sound like to big a job huh? ... Well, I've have to make 24 of them. Each one is taking me an average of 6 minutes. Thats 144 minutes of sanding to shape, cut out with the hole saw, and enlarging the hole with a dremel, repeat. Wonderful. Oh well, back to work. Hope you enjoyed my bordem :).

Buy a hole saw...

ArmedZagi 02-19-2007 10:13 PM

RE: First Profile - 72" Bipe Build Thread

I'm using one, but the wingtube's socket is larger than 1.5"...I still have to enlarge the hole.

Well, Ive got about 70% of the lower right wing done... Once again im waiting for wood to come in (wish UPS worked weekends...). I'll have a decent update by wensday for sure.

a belt sander would certainly help make for quick shaping...

Sorry I havnt come through with any more updates...I've been down with the flu for nearly a week [:'(] Didn't really feel like doing much more than lying in bed.

Anyway, I'll start working on it again. Hope to have a good update before friday.

I leave you with a couple (blurry [:@]) pics of the beginings of the lower left wing
