Thunder Tiger 61 GP engine for fun fly plane.
Has anyone used a Thunder Tiger 61 GP engine for a fun fly plane. I would guess the engine to be lighter than a ball bearing 61 and with a broader torque curve and a Mouse Can Muffler this could be a killer engine. Also they sell for about $85. I need some thoughts on this or of any other 60 size lightweight plane bearing engine.

I think there are some guys up north part of US the takes a morris knife, and makes it into a 60size.
Here is from what I remember, extend the wing by 1 bay on each side. then extend fuselageat the tail by either 4" or 6" They were running OS61FX on theirs. I think the weight was around 5.75lbs. Do a search on Knifes here in the funfly column ifyour interested. |

I was thinking more of a light weight plane bearing 60 with a Mouse Can Muffler to put in a 40 size fun fly plane. I am actually thinking of an Extreme 330. A friend has one with a GMS 61 and it flies great but I want a lighter weight engine for this or some other 40 size plane. I think a lot of the planes are underpowered for torque rolling. The big Cardens, etc. JUMP out of a torque roll and most of the planes I see that can torque roll can pull out vertically but just barely.

How much does your motor and moosecan weight.
Because if its over 20oz. In my opinion your going to kill your wing loading. My knife ARF with a YS63 weights 5lb 4oz. The knife ARF is a heavy ARF. My motor is 18.25oz of that weight. And it flys heavy. But vertical performance great. I had a TT46 and moosecan on it, and it would pull out of a hover real good, not like a rocket but good. That setup weighed 5lb. 2.5oz. But I have a Knife Kit that weight 4 1/2 pounds, with a TT46and moosecan and vertical it like a rocket. I have heard that alot of people that fly the extra 330 profile have a 46 on it and love it. With plenty of power to spare. The typical 46 size engines with moosecan weight approx 16oz. |

Michael - Have you flown that Knife yet?

Webra 50
Just go with the Webra 50 with a MCM, if you prefer. Weighs less and puts out more power, though is more expensive than your TT61GP your looking at. I still haven't found anything that I like better than the Webra 50.

Paul,
I haven't flown it yet. But it is ready to go. I have ran 3 tanks thru the new TT46, and motor set and ready. Just waiting on some good weather, and some time off. |
