Hey everyone!! I have been trying to hover/harrier for a while now. I cant seem to get that high AOA. While in the hover are you pulling full back elevator? Or does the tail just drop? This is an OMP Edge 540, does awsome Knife Edge, Flat spins, Torque Rolls, but I cant get a dang hover/harrier. What is the correct name of this trick when the tail is dropped at very high AOA and the plane is flying very slowly and almost dragging the tail on the ground while still moving forward? Harrier or Hover? Edge 540 Profile, os 46 fx 12x4. Thanks Everyone!

practice, practice and more practice. the slow hanging maneuver is called a harrier.
ps. put some weight in the tail!! but be careful a little at a time.

My experience has been that the smaller models don't have the wing span to dampen the roll in a Harrier. You frequently get wild wing rock that knocks it off to one side. Harriers require you to find the "sweet spot" for a given design. Enough speed that matches the AOA to lift your weight. Frequently "one more click" of throttle results in a hover and "one click less" has you stalling and unstalling with too low of an AOA. The big planes have a larger sweet spot and better dampening so you just mash the elevator and jockey the throttle.
One important thing to practice is hitting rudder with throttle. A lot of planes will roll right with throttle while in high alpha, My Cap will flip over if I don't feed in right rudder! (torque left and snap out. c'mon, there's 20" of prop and only 14" of rudder) That said:
My Global Raven (MVVS .46 w/pipe) wouldn't harrier with 100% spoilerons. Too heavy, too nose heavy, very short wing.
My Pizazz (Saito .91) will harrier at 4-5 clicks above idle with full elevator and 50% spoilerons. A gust of wind will send me scurrying for the throttle/rudder to maintain.
Kyosho Cap (ST .51) would harrier at 10-12 clicks off of idle but you had to juggle the ailerons and rudder like mad. Find the sweet spot and jockey throttle to maintain the angle.
1/4 Cap (Moki 2.1) will Elevator at 4-5 click off of idle (full elevator), Harrier at 5-6 clicks and hover at anything above. No spoilerons needed.
1/4 Giles (Moki 2.1) is about the same but transitions easier through the stall (less wing rock). The same occurs with Ultimates with their swept leading edge.
30% Extra (Brison 4.2) would harrier at 1/4 throttle and fall like a rock at anything under that.
1/3 Cap (BME102) you can drive the harrier around under 1/4 throttle, by far the easiest harrier ever. You can blip the throttle with rudder and opposite aileron and it will turn 180 in a wingspan.

Hack.... I have the omp 540 profile too. Love that plane!!!!
I have found that the plane harriers better with no mix on the wing. You have to Chase the wing until you get it under control but then it's smooth sailing from there. The wing does rock a little but like i said once you get it under control your there. It's real touchy on the throttle. I just blip the throttle when im in the harrier. I have about 1/2 elevator in when i get it right. Steer with your rudder. If you make a turn make sure you add power !!!!
Ask me how i know. hehe.

A good way to check cg on that plane is to do a pin wheel. Put it in a hover ( up high ) and give it full power and rudder. If it goes all the way around your there. If it stop's at 3/4 then move your cg back a 1/4 inch. Once you get the cg right its real easy to hover and harrier.

Hack; this may seem very weird to you but it's the best advice I can give, (get a PBF) they will teach you the things you want to learn. I have taught MANY of our seasond flyers to use the rudder for alot more than just taxing and some landing corrections. I know what you are probably thinking " what the heck is this guy talking about I already know alot of 3D stuff" well man this thing will make you alot better and you don't have to worry about hurting it. Just bring lots of props and some stunts you want to work on and have fun. Do you attend the Castel AFB show in Atwatwer? I will have a booth this year selling them and I will have 4 or 5 to allow people to try out. Just my 2 cents... :D BENDER

Thanks so much guys. I do have a PBF, but it does not require me to hold any elevator when doing a forward flight slow harrier. I am thinking that my cg is not far enough back on the profile plane. Thanks again guys!!

The plane in the 1st few photos is an OMP edge, same motor combo as yours....not sure about the prop...probably and 11.5x4 APC on his.......this is one rock solid hover/TR'n bird......Gator
