Ohio Models GS540 - Servos?

I've just started construction on an OMP GS540.

I have some Hitec HS-425BB's from a previous project sitting around and was wondering if these would be up to the task for this model. I'll probably just go with a single aileron servo on each side, but it looks like there are two each for the rudder and one for each elevator half.

What setups are you guys using that have completed and flown one? Battery?

TIA

Karl

Get some MPI Corelesses, they are great!

I'm in the same boat. Just picked one up at the WRAMS show. I was supposed to get a Moki there also but, alas, the vendor didn't show up :(

Karl I would not go with anything less than a JR 8321. If it were mine it would have 8411's on everything less the throttle.

In that case, I will be needing a sponsor.... :(

Don't even have a motor for it yet.

Karl I think JR 4721's would work for your Edge if you did not want to go digital. Then go with a 6 volt pack. Come on I have been flying for 2 weeks and I know better than to use standard servos in a plane like that. ;)

8411's really are way overkill on this. go to the MPI site and get some of those. They are $50 and are amazing!

Thanks scole,

At least SOMEONE has some helpful information  :D

The HS-425's aren't exactly standard hobby servos, but probably just one step above.

Stall Torque (4.8V): 45.82 oz/in.
Stall Torque (6.0V): 56.93 oz/in.

Thought since I was pairing them up I could get by with them. Silly me. Guess I'll look into something beefier. Just pushes the first flight back a bit.

How about Futaba 9202's?

I was thinking about hitec 625MG or 645MG any opinions?

Actually the 605BB looks decent

Stall Torque (4.8V): 76.37 oz/in.
Stall Torque (6.0V): 94.43 oz/in.

Under $30/ea

Anyone using 6v systems?

Everyone says the 605's don't center worth a crap...

David,
I suggested the 605's to Karl. I have used them with no trouble in planes and helis.....

Hard to beat for 28 bucks.

David,

Aside from the coreless design, those Futabas have similar specs to what I already have.

Tried any of those Hitec digitals????

Coreless motors are alot more precise and have better holding strength but they do cost a little more... I guess it depends on how many flights you want before it self destructs. I got 5...

You know how I feel about Hitec's. :D

I am going to use 605's in mine. I have used these before in other planes and haven't had any problems. They center pretty well but not like a digital, I never noticed this problem until I put huge horns on them but I think on this profile it wouldn't matter much. I currently have them on a 80 inch cap232 and fly the crap out of it.

The HITEC 5945 digitals rule! Plus noooooooo mathbox to buy. You can program these babys. Try them you will love them, I've been using them in my giant scales since they first came out and I love them, Plus you can't beet the fact that they take care of there customers better and faster than anyone! Hope this helps........BENDER

Hitec 605

These servo's suck. I have 4 of them and only 1 centers at all. The other 3 will center, but their endpoints are uneven. They will go past the endpoint and then come back about 5 degrees (which can make precision aerobatics look like crap). I've also tried the hobbico 65 (same thing i think) and they indeed have the exact same problem. I've used HS 645mg's and 625mg's. Both are good servo's and I think they would serve you well in your plane. (625's are a little faster) I know a guy who has the BIG H9 Cap using 625's on the ailerons and they haven't failed him yet. They center well also..

Yeah no Matchbox but you have to buy a programmer........??????
And you have to look for a "Born on date" ***?

I have no problem with their analog servos but the digis are another story IMHO.

Ok I am done....

Lets not make Karls thread into a maufacturer debate.

GS540P servos

We at OMP recommend servos from 70 - 90 in-oz of torque. This is considered a medium torque servo and will work more than adequate for the elevators and ailerons. You can use two of the same for the rudder or our current recommendation is to use one high torque servo for the rudder (130 - 150 in-oz). There are many of those available as well. The reasoning behind that is it's chepare to buy one high torque servo instead of two medium torque servos, one servo doesn't fight another servo, and you save tail weight (yes I know!).

My personal plane has 6 Hitec 605 servos in it although at least two of them have been converted over to metal gear only because the respective control surfaces where caught messin' with the ground! In retrospect, I think your favorite brand of medium torque servo is the way to go and metal gear is obviously more durable when whacking the control surfaces!

We've used the Hitec 605 servos on our bigger Yellow Aircraft CAP 232, Extra 300L, and Sukhoi SU-31 with good results. On the rudder, we typically use a 645 with excellent results (the 605s are on everything else except throttle). The 645s are beefy servos and work well under stress. The centering isn't absolutely perfect, but it's very close and while it might not be good enough for judged pattern flying, for sport and fun-flying, 605s and 645s are fine.

Our 605/645 servos have flown in hundreds of flights without issue. I'm confident enough to use them in the big Yellows as well as my brand new Morris Giant Sudokhoi.

Take a peek at them in action at the link below (in my signature).

Yours,
Juhan

I seen a guy on the internet with an Aeroworks Extra profile (almost the same thing) and i believe he had 8 JR 517's on them with no problem.

wreckerman, it looks like those Hitec servos were so strong that the rudder and throttle servos contorted the fuse at full throw! ;)

Nice plane, sorry to see the loss.
