Here is a pic of Jeff's gear on my 540P...

They look great, did you put hardwood or balsa fillers in the fuse where the screws go through? Did the gear come with axles, or did you make up your own? I've just about got the wing finished and am going to build the fuse next...

I broke my jeff williams cf gear on a MILD bounce on takeoff, only the third time out! (just this last sunday). But............here's why I think they broke so easy..........I always use 1/4-20 nylon bolts to mount landing gear on 40 size planes, so there is a weak point, and the nylon bolts break before the lg rip half the fuse apart........well the jw cf gear aren't wide enough ( about 1" ) so you only have about 1/4" on each side of the bolts.........well, at the time of installation, I didn't think much of it, they're carbon fiber, right? The "bounced" takeoff didn't even break the nylon bolts!

Just a heads up! I'm sure the gear hold up with a smaller hole drilled in them. (don't know how you guys deal with the fuse ripping problem?)

So I ordered some krazy legs sun night ( he was watching the spurs game, oops!) I got them today and just finished installing them.

Just curious, does anyone know if Jeff W. makes his gear with epoxy resin or polyester, it didn't seem like epoxy to me, may have something to do with their breaking? ( I don't want to plant seeds of doubt about their quality, I know a lot of planes out their have them, just don't drill a 1/4" hole in 'em)

I use 6-32 bolts to fasten mine on. I had a dead stick and broke the bolt..the gear was still fine. I don't have a fuse ripping problem since I have a hardwood block mounted where both of the bolts go thru the fuse. I also staggered the bolts where the one on bottom has more meat in front of the bolt and the one on top has more meat behind the bolt.

Funny thing..when I sent Jeff the Email to order the set for my OMP 540, I told him I liked the gear because they were so much stronger than I had imagined. Different strokes, I reckon.

Same here with the 6-32 bolts. I just added some balsa filler before I sheeted the sides where the gear was going.

Jive turkey, I would guess that the 1/4" hole was the problem, creating a weak spot. If I made the gear wider and stronger there would be no weight savings, hence the reason most want them. I do not make the gear, Graphtech RC manufacturers the gear for me, TNT, Aeroworks and others. I designed the gear, Graphtech builds it. I am sorry yours broke, I will be happy to cut you a very special one time price for your bad luck. I have dropped mine in from 10 feet onto asphalt and they did not breat, but it did bend the 6/32 mounting bolt. I guess we all have different luck. Email me at [email protected], Jeff Williams

I thought someone was going to start making a carbon fiber gear for the big OMP profile? I'm pretty sure Mike Pilkenton mentioned this at one time. I pm'd him about it but never got a reply. Anyone know anything?

Wade

Thanks for all the good info guys, I'm ordering a set now and will be sure to use the smaller bolts, with hardwood inside the fuse....

CF gear

Wade, we investigated doing CF gear for the giant profile but certain companies we won't do business with due to poor integrity. Nuff said. The hottest gear we have going for the GS540P is the Tetherite gear which now comes stock in all new kits. This is a fiberglass gear and has proven very durable and very cost effective. It is also 1/4 lb lighter than the aluminum and won't break like CF even if the plane flattens all the way to the fuselage - yes I know this from a couple of dorked up dead stick hovers!

Mike,
Thanks for the info! It seems like the OMP GS Edge kit keeps getting better and better all the time.

Will they work on the Aeroworks 300 Profile?

well, I hate to say this, but I broke the CF gear on my Sudokhoi yesterday too. Lasted only 3 flights .I used 6/32 bolts. A little bouncing after a dead stick and it broke right where the curve is. I wicked in some thin CA, and kept flying it. It worked, but I will have to replace it. Good thing is I still have a couple spare ones. ;)

Yes they do - and you get an additional 3" of prop clearance over the stock gear :D .
Good landings.

I'll have to look into them. The stock gear looks a bit small any how.

Thanks Jeff, I just got my krazy legs, and my knife already has 1/4" holes drilled in it. Maybe when I build a SLEDGE ( thanks for the great design, so I here!) this coming fall/winter (or sooner if the Knife dies) I'll order a set from you!

I have seen JWilliams, carbon fiber gear. They look cool. A few people here in memphis use them on their profiles. I don't use them. I have never had a chance.

I bought me 2 sets of Krazylegs, I bought a regular set, and heavyduty set. I have been beating them up for over a year, and haven't broke yet. and I paid less then $10.00 for the regular set. I have hundreds of flights.

Tetherite, are guys planning on making a set of Krazylegs for the ExtemeflightRC 60" profiles.

We have the Lite Weight's (LW's), the Heavy Duty's (HD's)and the
Giant Scale (GS's) for the OMP 540 P and the A-W 300L. We're thinking about an intermediate size for the 60" variety planes. Need to be a little stronger and have a taller mounting surface than the HD "Legs". Will keep you posted on progress!

I have a 84" WS, 15#, profile GeeBee.
Do you have any gear that would work for this plane? How much and how to order, please?
Thanks

If you would send a direct e-mail, I'll be glad to provide the info on the gear.
Thanx!

I have the Krazy Legs on my FF540 and they are great. I hav ethe GS Krazy Legs on the shelf, waiting for some time to do the GS 540, haggling with myself on the power. Got a MDS 148, don't think that will do it justice after Termagator shook out my FF540.
