Profile for a 55 AX

Hi all,

I'm looking for some suggestions for a plane to suite this engine. What would be easiest to get in the air?

I need something with a removable or two piece wing.

Thanks in advance
Mitch

40 size and removable wings is a pain and adds unnecessary weight.
A 40 size profile for that motor would fit in just about any vehicle made except maybe a smart car.

Sounds like you are after an ARF but the Swany kits are fast builds.
If you need an ARF then the OMP ProYak or Edge would be the ticket.
Fit that motor with a 13x4 and either of those birds are happy.

I have that engine on my Mojo 40 (the plane in my avatar), and it is awesome. It fits the back of my CR-V easily, even with all the seats up. I wouldn't want to mess with a removable wing on that size plane. It is a very easy build.

Good luck

I've had an OS 55 on my Easysport (wing bolts on) and it flys like a dream. I love this combo. Even with five other planes I still take this guy with me all the time. It seem easy to bolt and unbolt the wing and place both in my car or SUV.

I'm looking for some suggestions for a plane to suite this engine.
So what type of plane are you looking for?

3D?
Aerobatic?
Scale?
Sport?
Fast?
Slow?
Relaxing?
Challenging?

Hey Dave... it never occurred to me that a profile would be other than 3D. So a challenging 3D plane is what I'm looking for.

And thank you all for the suggestions. I have to say again that a removable wing is a must have.

Hey MPeg,

Try one of these IF (and only if) a removable wing is your only option:

Otherwise, the kind folks here are steering you straight with these:

http://www.swanyshouse.com/mojo/mojo.aspx (Kit: must build)

http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/models/index.htm (ARF)

http://www.valuehobby.com/product_de...d=4&item_id=46 (ARF)

RE: Profile for a 55 AX

There are several good 3D profiles that would work great with a 55AX. Of those only a few have removable wings.

OMP Edge 540 V3 (kit or ARF)
OMP Pro Yak V3 (kit or ARF)
TM Pro Katana 46 V2 ARF
Precision Aerobatics Bad Boy V2 ARF

Mojo 40 kit (I think Swany makes a removable wing kit, but not sure)

Just curious, but why is a removable wing an absolute must-have? If you can get by with a permanently mounted wing your options will vastly improve.

RE: Profile for a 55 AX

Why a removable wing? My car's just to darn small. I have a Multiplex Acromaster. And I can just barely get it into the back seat. And that's just a 43 inch wing span. It's OK after it's in the car. It's just getting in in and out undamaged that's a challenge. And I'm planning to sell the car this summer. So I'm being extra careful with the interior.

Anyone want to buy a 2008 Kia Spectra?

Hey Nitro... I actually have one of cici's planes. The F3a It flys well. But I just don't trust the construction. The fuse just seems too flimsy in the nose area and the LG mounts are going to need some work if I want to keep it.

jzrf6c... I had an Easy sport many years ago. It was a great flyer.

Thanks all.

Hi Mumblety, why don't you fit wings to the Kia and make it RC.....you drive it to the field, get out and fly it RC, then drive it back.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif.. see pic

Bundubasher... this is an excellent idea. 1.80 OS perhaps?

I'm thinkin' the 47" ProYak V3 will work for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have a Mojo 40 with an OS55AX and it's a great combo. (APC 13x4 sport prop) My friend has the same engine and prop on a Primo 40 and says the primo is even better than the Mojo. It is small enough to fit in a small car no problem. You can't go wrong with Swaneys planes.

I ended up with a ProYak 47". I like the way it flies... when the engine works. sigh... Maybe this weekend.

Try and OS F plug and make sure its tuned right.

RE: Profile for a 55 AX

Flameouts on the 55AX seem to be pretty common, but they can be easily cured.

1. Make sure EVERY bolt, screw, nut, nipple, is tight. We've had several that were too loosely assembled from the factory. This unusual for an OS engine in general, but seems to happen often in the 55AX for some reason.

2. Use an OS F glow plug.

3. Do NOT run the engine too rich on either the high or the low side. A little rich is fine, but too rich will cause flameouts even with the OS F plug.

You didn't say what prop you're running, but the APC 13x4 (not 4w) works great for 3D flying.
