MUBU II F5D Build
Well the time has come to start my F5D build, If you guys would like I will do a thread here as I know most of you and didnt know where else to put it where friends can criticise me while I am at it! (gluttin for punishment)
I am starting with the plugs that we got from germany, the guys that designed this did so for F5D speeds and power levels. They produced a prototype and put about 1/5 F5D power in it and had very good success flying it and that is about as far as the project went, until now. The designers got very busy with there studies in aerospace stuff and have little time for this now. These gentlemen are also responsible for the sawtooth prop and drive system that was used by the swiss team at the world championships in muncie last year. Those of you that did not see that prop it is a large diameter high pitch prop with a serrated leading edge something like a steak knife. They tell me that the notches in the leading edge help keep the prop from cavitating on accelleration and under high loads. (beyond my knowlage) This drive system won the Neu cup and regularly did times on the FAI course of 55 seconds. I now own this drive system and am waiting for delivery from germany so I can design a pod (fuselage) to go with the wing.
That is a little background on this project and if you would like to see it I will post, If I get to many complaints I wont.

A few pics of the plugs with lite coat of PVA.

Were working on it together, I picked up the plugs from him this morning. I will probably do most of the building and he will do most of the flying. He is one of those guys that makes you sick when you watch him fly,,, young punk!
How did your new EF1 fly?

No worries Ed, chime in anytime!
Yes that is the drive, should be getting here sometime this week. They are in process of making another one that uses a little different motor that should hold up a little better than that one but dimensionally about the same. If we make the pod fit the one I am getting there new one will fit as well.
Daven,
Notice no wings in pic, havent pulled a new mold off of the plug yet. Soon though as the boys were tough on them in Phoenix

RE: MUBU II F5D Build
Well I got the drive package from germany today And now I can go about making a pod section. I did some prelim c.g. tests on a stick and am very encouraged. I think it will balance well with a smaller pod than i was expecting.
I have 2 layers of surface coat 3 layers of 2oz. and 9 layers of 9oz. on the plugs. This afternoon I will build the reinforcement structure and post some pics.

Did reinforcement on molds this afternoon. Tomorrow will sand them all smooth and laminate some 1/4" plywood onto back then pop them off the plug and see if they are useable.

We have molds!
This morning I demolded from the plugs to check fit which was pretty good, I then painted all inside wood with epoxy to protect from moisture and glued the backs on. The molds were VERY stiff even before the backs went on.
Next is to polish surface coat and pull a part so I can start doing the pod.

Dave N....knock on wood I've been pretty easy on stuff the last few years, pretty much since I went away from my white and orange planes, lol. The only reason I need another Endeavor is my caller used it up at Phoenix while I was on the other side of the world! lol

Yeah. I think he's afraid to use the other Q40 & engine I left at his house. It's my Too Sweet, completely ready to go. Last time I used it was the last NMPRA Champ race in Florida, turned several sub minute times. Nice to know that combo's still together, hopefully I'll be able to use it at this years Champ race

DE, You tell BUCKWHEAT he is full of S!@#$. Money talks and BS walks. 2012 will be just like 2011. However, the MUBU looks AWESOME!!!
Gary S, you will be tired from your long journey home. No need to come to the Champ Race. You need to rest up and take the Year off.
DN, there is no wing mold for the Endeavor. So the Fuselages are just glorified Rockets at this point.

RE: MUBU II F5D Build
Okay back to MUBU,
I finished polishing the molds and my plans are to lay up a mule this weekend. This will not be flyable but will have a fake spar and aileron / elevator spreaders so I can cut surfaces loose and work out placement of all the neet little bits to make it go. I will also start laying out the pod with the criteria being 1. Smallest package possible 2. Being able to get it to balance 3. Ease of maintenance. I will also begin to think about winglets. The designer says to start big (he gave me some ideas) but it will end up needing very small winglets mostly to aid in launch.
I will post more after the weekend and maybe we will see what the wing looks like.

RE: MUBU II F5D Build
DK, I've already had almost 11 months off of racing. Besides, I'll be back home in July so I'll have plenty of time to rest before the Champ Race
