Traveling/Shipping boxes
Hi everyone:
Me and some pylon racer friends here in México are willing to attend to Phoenix JR Cup next year (2006) and some other events in USA.
This would be like 2 days driving from Mexico city, therefore we are thinking and evaluating how expensive would it be getting there by plane and renting a van over there.
Could you be so kind in posting some pics of your traveling boxes.
As well could you tell me how much they weight to calculate the extra baggage fee.
Thanks a lot.

RE: Traveling/Shipping boxes
Here are a couple pics of my wood boxes.
I use one for two fuses and my transmitters, the 2nd box carries 2 wings, my fueler, my wheels, and a set of ball drivers.

Daven, thank you very much, this is of great help, as me and some pals are planning on attending some races in 2006 mainly Phoenix and Tangerine and it would really be much better to be able to go by plane rather than by car which would be like 2 days driving.
I appreciate your help.
Victor.

Doesn't make much sense to me.... although many words have multiple meanings [X(]

Thats exactly the translation, and it very much used in mexican spanish to state that you have all the arguments to support what youre saying.

I have used Pack Lite Systems to construct my shipping containers and am very pleased with them. Travis Flynn and a few people from Florida are also using them, Enclosed is a link to their website. http://www.pack-lite.com/ Prices are about $100 - $150 for a QM 40 Q500 sized box. They will custom make any size you require.

GREAT, thank you very much
Do you usually use 1 container for 2 planes or one container per plane.
Best Regards.

RE: Traveling/Shipping boxes
I fly from Denver usually on United. My last trip to Winterfest I was able to pack 3 planes in my box (Q500's) 2 Birds of Prey and 1 V-Max. United charged me $50.00 extra to ship from Denver, and $50.00 to return from Phoenix. The box dimensions are 9 x 16 x 59 inches. All of my planes are wrapped in bubble wrap then put in the box. I have never had a problem with any planes arriving broken. I hope this helps.

Doug,
Do they ever hassle you about the presence of engines and fuel tanks, and/or do you ship those separately? I went to the Nats on United, and all my checked baggage (pit gear & tools) was X-rayed, opened, pawed through, scattered, and mauled pretty good. It looked like a raccoon got in there, except raccoons don't leave those little TSA calling cards.

You hit on it Duane. That is the only reason that I just ship them through FedEx a week in advance. I would always get run through the ringer about fuel tanks. And by shipping my planes to the hotel, I don't need a huge rental van to carry the boxes from the airport. Just have a call tag sent to the hotel to have them picked up and sent back home.

RE: Traveling/Shipping boxes
We barely made it to Phoenix in Feb trying to take planes on the plane with Sun Country. Fuel tanks and Engines were a problem if fuel had ever passed through them. The tanks were the big issue. I don't think I will try to bring them on the plane again. We argued for about an hour before someone let us through. I had also brought a box with my support equipment that was thouroughy inspected and packed up horribly. They decided to take apart my starter, which contained 6 - 3300 NIMH cells and left all 6 batteries floating around in my box.
I'm with Randy, I will ship my stuff to the hotel and not bother with the hassles hauling these things through the airport. I know you have the risk of stuff getting broke, but I feel pretty safe with the aluminum box. I would go with the corrugated plastic or cardboard as shown above before going with wood.

RE: Traveling/Shipping boxes
This doesn't pertain to oversize packages, but I had an issue at the Indianapolis airport coming back from the 2003 Nats. While waiting for my flight, I heard my name called on the initercom to report to the security check point. The head of security introduced himself, and asked what was in my box that I checked (tool box w/engines, no planes or fuel tanks, they were FedEx'd). He then asked if I had cleaned my engines with anything. I said yes, I flushed them with alcohol and oiled them with castor oil. He said ok, no problem, as he had the same thing happen with somebody the day before. He then said that something in the residuel fuel/oil or something set off their scanners as TNT. I asked him why nothing happened when I was leaving Phoenix, and he said that their scanner was only one of four in the country, and was very sensitive. Since then I've decided to just ship everything to any races that are beyond driving distance. Unfortunately, with work and everything, I haven't had that chance since that Nats trip.

RE: Traveling/Shipping boxes
That's your secret for speed...... TNT. You big cheater.
One year going to the Nats (maybe 2001). They said NO.. and this was on a Saturday. So we lugged the big aluminum box to an air cargo shipping company who said no problem, for $150.00 bucks one way. I couldn't believe that the airline turned us away, that was the last time I flew United Airlines.

RE: Traveling/Shipping boxes
Duane,
I usually, ship my planes without the fuel tanks installed. I usually bring new ones with me in my tool box. When I get to Phoenix, I just slip them in place. I build the tanks and put new tubing on them before leaving Denver. I also take my engines off the airplanes spray them down with brake cleaner and pack them in my tool box. I have never had a problem with this procedure to date.
