Default landing gear mounting

Hi Guys,
I have a question, do you mount your landing gear with nylon bolts so they can break away, or how you moun them with metal screws. Reason I ask, I have had nylon bolts break on a not too hard a landing and the gear does more damage when it leaves the plane. Just curious how everyone does it.

What size of nylon bolts, how many, and what head shape have you been using?

I Tend to use two 1/4x20 flathead nylon. Anything with a smaller diameter or finer threads are a bit weak. Another advantage is at an event you can use the same spares for your wing. If you leave them extend under the wing plates a bit a broken bolt is not difficult to remove by screwing it on through from underneath with pliers and I carry a pair of ninety degree needle nose for that purpose.

I do not like pieces departing my airplane. I have a 1/8 ply plate in the fuselage. I use 4 6-32 flat head screws screwed into blind nuts in the plate. I mold my own fuselages and the L.G. plate will not tear out. I use 10-24 flat head steel screws for my wings. I have been trying 8-32 but the thread is a bit fine for the wood blocks.

Default landing gear mounting

Hi Ed,
I guess I am going with what you said. I never land hard, but have had the nylon bolts break on occasion. I was using 3 10/24 nylon flat heads. The new fuselage I am building has a keyed, captured landing gear plate so I was going to use 4 6/32 screws and blind nuts too. I just wanted to see if anyone else had done this. I have bought a couple of the carbon fiber gear and I wanted to decide which way i was going to go before I start drilling holes in them. Boy are they light.

4 - 6/32s sounds like overkill to me.

I've been using metal 3 - 6/32s into blind nuts in my Quickees for quite a while, and never had a problem. 2 in the front spread out, and 1 in the rear centered.

Make sure you trim off the bolts, so they don't stick up into you fuze. Usually, the fuel tank sits pretty close to this area, and you don't want that rubbing against the metal bolts.

However, on Q40s, I am using plastic. 3 - 1/4 20s.
