Nelson sleeve ID
I have a couple of new Nelson AAC piston / sleeve / head sets as part of a buddy's estate, and need to figure out what they're for - the Q500 engine, or the QM40 engine (he had both).
Is it possible to measure from the top of the exhaust port to the top of the sleeve and determine which by exhaust timing differences? The tops of the exhaust ports are slightly crowned, not cut straight across, if that's a clue.
Thanks for the help,
Gordon
PS - here's a pic of a v-tail on a Q500, where the two parts of the V actually come from the middle of the fuse sides, not setting on top like a more conventional V. Any thoughts on who's kit this might be?

Your best bet may be to contact Dave Shadel at Performance Specialties.. He would for sure be able to tell you how to ID them..

Fizzwater,
The easiest way to tell the difference between the q-500 sleeve and the qm40 is by looking at the exhaust port. The QM40 sleeve has a larger curved opening on the top side of the port.

They're AAC, and each is a set of piston, sleeve, and head. Both sets are brand new, still wrapped in plastic.
I e-mailed Dave Shadel about how to id them, and he's offered to buy, also. I'm actually holding off for a bit, until I get pricing figured out on everything I'm dealing with (several sport planes, tools, chargers, engines, radio parts, etc, etc... - it's been quite an effort so far) before I start selling stuff - but I'll put your name on the list! Some of the items I'm hoping to purchase myself, so I can start racing again.. wish me luck!

Gordon,
I'm in Lee's Summit and fairly knowledgeable about these motors. Give me a ring and we can get together to look things over.

If I can't figure it out, I have a lot of more experienced guys on speed dial. You know who you are, please answer this time...

AJ- we'll run into each other, I'm pretty sure. I am just beginning to start flying again after a three year layoff. I was sort of out of commission for a while after a car wreck, so it's going to take me a while to get my thumbs back up to speed. I'll probably be flying with Carl & Jim & Steve from the RC Barnstormers for a while before I make the plunge back into 428 or QM40, but I'm sure we'll meet up sometime. Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it - but first, I think I'll just pull a sleeve on one of the Q500 engines I've got in a box and compare. Doug had 3 1/3 Nelson Q500 engines, and 1 QM40 that I'm dealing with, so I have each type to compare with! The 1/3 is in pretty bad shape - broken case at the muffler mount, rough bearings, etc. One MIGHT be able to salvage a crank and head, not sure about the piston/sleeve fit in that one.. The other 4 engines are in pretty decent shape.

RE: Nelson sleeve ID
There have been rumors floating out there that the newer aluminum that Henry has been using is not as pure. I have NO idea if that is true or not, just rumored. I do know that my last few "newer" nelsons have not been as strong as my older stuff. Not sure if that is bad luck, poor breakin, or whatever.
I need a couple top ends and if I could pick something up at a decent price I would.

RE: Nelson sleeve ID
As Dan posted. the top of the Q40 exhaust has a much higher "Eyebrow" curve than the 428.
The dimension from the bottom of the exhaust port to the top of the exhaust port is:-
428 0.250"
422 0.325"
That difference can be measured with a tape measure.

I'll just grab my calipers, they're easier to find than a tape measure around my house! We just finished building this house, and all of the tape measures have wandered off measuring windows, furniture, etc.
Thanks for the measurements, that'll be easier than pulling apart an engine just to compare! Right off the top of my head, I'll bet they're 428 sleeves / pistons.
Thanks for all the help, guys.

RE: Nelson sleeve ID
The Q500 tail looks like a Jim Allen Quik-V2 or 3.....If you can post a couple more shots of the rest of the fuse I can tell you for sure.

here's some more pics, hopefully this'll be enough detail to figure out what this plane is. There's actually two planes, with some differences in the fuselage, but seemingly identical wings. The wings appear to be wood sheeted foam, with fiberglass bottoms to the wingtips, with the sheeting extending on the top surface to the tip.
Again, thanks to everyone for helping me identify the sleeves and the planes.

Thanks, Gary! What sort of differences would I see between the 2, 3, and 4? There's another plane (no pics, and it's dark out now..) with the same wing, a little bit shorter fuse, V-tail mounted on top with internal linkage - might it be one of the different versions?
Thanks again, you've been most helpful!

RE: Nelson sleeve ID
The Quik-V2 had the same fuse, but a different airfoil, different wingtips, and a 50" span. The 3 & 4 had the wing like yours (glass lower tips, 52" span). The 4 had a shorter nose, the tail moved to the top of the fuse, and internal linkages. The second one you have sounds like a home-grown version of the 4 somebody built (it was never produced, only Jim Allen and myself had true Quik-V4's because producing kits was more work than it was worth).
If you don't mind me asking, who was your buddy?

Doug Baker, he passed away about 10 months ago from a heart attack. A few years back he and I raced together, then he had an accident at work and ended up unable to race. so I sort of lost interest for a while, too. He was a good friend, fun to know. It's been tough, sorting through all of this stuff - I keep finding myself wanting to call him and ask him about this or that.. and then realize i can't.
Thanks, Gary - you may be right, it might be a home-brew that someone built with a leftover wing or something like that.

Ok, I'm sorry to hear that. I definately remember the name, can't quite picture his face. There used to be a lot of guys from KS that raced quite a bit, they are/were all great guys..

Doug and I have been to the Q500 race in Phoenix early in the year - it was a great way to get out of the snow and cold here in Kansas City! I used to call for him at that one. I remember he called me up one day, asked if I'd go to Phoenix with him and call for him, and said the hotel and airfare were on him. How could I resist? That was one of the best trips we had. Flew down Thursday, practiced Friday, raced Sat-Sun, partied pretty good Sunday night, and flew home Monday. Now that's the way to do a race!
Lots of good memories, and thanks to all of you for helping ID this stuff. Some of it I'm going to purchase, some gets sold, it's all a lot of work sorting this stuff out.
