Dominator 500 taill choices
hey guys, I have read the thread about how to make the 'V' tail work right, but I am worried that I might not get it exactly straight which will slow me down during races. I have considered the conventional tail but want to snaz it up a bit. What do y'all thinkn about a Dominator 500 with a 'T' tail configuration? I'm thinking tha tI wil have to stick the vert stab up so tha tI can run the pushrod through it but other then that I would like to know what you think about this.. I haven't ever seena 'T' tailed Q-5000 before, is there a reason?
Thanx for all input on this subject.

To "T" or not to "T". That is the question.
Gastronom,
There may be aerodynamic reasons why a "T" tail isn't as good a choice as a standard configuration. However, I don't know what the difference would be other than perhaps the fact that the elevator is above the prop wash and therefore not as effective on take off until speed is built up. (There are many on this forum who can tell you why the "V" tail is best).
That being said, I've raced against a fellow who builds his quickies with "T" tails and he is very competitive at least on the local level.
Let us know what you decide.
BTW, I love your signiture!

Actually, the T-Tail flies very well... I built and flew a number for several years. The stab/elevator is up out of the turbulance and is very effective... mine took off better than any Q-500 plane I have ever had. The big drawback to a V-Tail are a weight/complexity penalty to build and more wet area/angles than a V-Tail. If in doubt... just build a conventional tail if you are a novice... it will go as fast as you can... and spend your extra effort improving your flying and race trimming skills. Good luck.

I have talked with local flyers on this subject and one seems to think that the conventional tail configuration is actually outside of the slip stream while in a turn, he says that the 'T' tail design would put the elevator rightr in the slip stream causeing more turbulance. Just wanted to see what y'all thought about this theory....
I still plan on doing the D500 "T' tail and will keep you all posted on the progress and will post pics when it is complete...
