Thanks for the reply. I ended up going with 25mm and stopping 30mm on the hinge line from the tailplane tip.

Have you flown yours? We are having a race next month, currently I am finishing one extra seeker :)
|
No not yet, still flying my quick V6 planes.
summer weather is under way here now and I've started doing a few house reservations and that slows down my modeling big time. |
I forgot bout weather :) we have sun all year long here.
Maiden flight this afternoon. I am having the covering in camo scheme, to intimidate other competitor hahahaha.. I am going to tell the announcer the idea of being chased by interceptor. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d4b09f6528.jpg |
Ive been looking for Quick V6 kit - who has a spare they would sell ?

My main plane which has I believed broken in engine, crashed :), on pole 2, my caller stand too close and blocked my view, too late to correct the path and I hit a tree on entering pole 3. Finished no 3 with the camo backup plane but with OS engine instead, which is a tad slower and I somehow managed to ran it lean and destroyed the piston and liner :) |

Have the nationals pylon on 1 january 2024. Have a question is the prop on the camo coloured Q500 a 9.5 x 7N or a 9.5 X 7.5N APC? Also i'm down to my last 3 merlin 2016 glow plugs, what plugs are you using and where can I buy them? Geoff |
I haven't tried the N of 9x7.5 but have tried the 8.8x8.25N(as far as i can remember) and I think it required a lot higher rpm engine.
the one on the plane was 9x8, I would go with 9x75 next. as the engine gets older 9x8 is a bit too much. So far with OS 46 ax 2 we have used 9x7.5 9x8 and 10x6. the 10x6 is surprisingly good on some planes we fly here. as for the plug I am using just os 8. What is the difference between os 8 and merlin on RPM? You can try dubb jett for merlin plug. |
The 2016 was recommended to me by the owner of Merlin glow plugs Al Kelly. The 2016 has showen a higher ground RPM than the OS #8.
What nitro percentage are you using we use 10%. The most used prop for our racing is the 8.75 x 8.75w APC. Geoff |
Ahhh interesting with the plug, I will try it then if I can find them.
whats the ground rpm you are getting with the 8.75x8.75w? |
Got to do some work on the Q500 yesterday. Prop is actually a 8.8 x 8 3/4 and peak is 16500 rpm.
Tried a 10 x 6 dont think it is any faster but seemed to pull around the base turn better, is also faster off the start. Checked RPM with the 10 x 6 prop, the Merin 2016 glow plug is 400-500 rpm higher than the OS #8 motor sounds bettter in the air also. Fuel we use is 10% nitro. Also tried a 10 x 7 apc and this seemed to be a good prospect although the day was quite humid which did not help. Motor is pecked and backed off while pinching fuel line and looking for the RPM jump and as the 2016 plug looks new after 10 plus runs I must be doing something right. One thing the OS 46 does not like as you will know is a lean run, cooked liner in no time. Wish our rules allowed the new Jett 424 motor but as it doesnt have a fully working carb it is not allowed. But think it would out last the OS by a country mile. Geoff |
ahh ok I already got a few 8.8 to test. I also notice 10x6 gave better turn at 2 and 3 which is significant,
If you found where to get some merlin 2016 you gotta let me know hahahah |
Raced on the 1st January 2024 here in NZ at our nationals. I went with a 10x6 apc prop and it was good enough to get me first place win. At the end of the last race the motor felt a bit gritty when turning over, Found it was a damaged piston.

Congratulations !
Was that a lean run? |
Not sure. At no time during any of the priviest races did the motor sound lean or show any signs of losing power from being lean.
The damage is only in that one spot, wondering if the motor ingested a bit of grit. Supplied fuel was Omega 10%, I normally run my own mix 10% with Klotz super techniplate. G |
Check to see if part of the rear bearing race broke off?
