Engine performance, how to shim for better performance

Are there any articles available on line on how to improve the performance of an engine using shims, other simple techniques.

Are you referring to head shims or backplate shims?

I was referring to head shims, I know changing the compression ratio will increase / decrease performance, I was curious if there are any articles on the subject with additional interest in knowing if changing the cylinder height can make any positive change in high end performance.
