I think it would be more accurate to say that the China Clipper is a copy of the Scat Cat.
Anyone have a picture of a Bridi Quickest 500? It was another early high wing design. Going back, a common practice was to turn the fuselage over on the Spickler kit and build a high wing model. Where would we have been at that time without the K&B 40? |

I'm going to pick up a set of plans for the Spickler Quickie 500 on Sunday. I am going to have them reduced to a size I can scan if FedEx Office/Kinko's can't scan them into a PDF (or some other format) for me. Then I will enlarge them back to 100% in a PDF that anyone can take to a FedEx Office and get them printed.
To sweeten the deal I am going to make foam core templates and sell foam cores for $10 a set. And I'll probably get extra sets of the plans printed to have available. Sure I like my new Quickie design, but a Spickler Quickie 500 was being flown at a Quickie 25 race last weekend and doing fine. It could make a fine club build project as Scott Hartman mentioned in my "Resurgence" thread. |

Did you know that you can't buy Ambroid glue anymore from the Evil Empire? I knew that modeling was nearly dead when Pettit Paints quit making Hobby Poxy II, but Ambroid goes back 75 years. It's still the best glue for joining sheets of balsa for skins, because it sands so well.
I still haven't found a better epoxy than Hobby Poxy II for constuction. Though I am thinking about trying T-88 or Hexcell All-Purpose Structural Adhesive. Anybody? |

Hey thanks for the product test Don. Yes, that is the glue I intend to get (Systems III T-88).
I've got left a very small amount of HobbyPoxy II left, and nothing I've tried has worked as well. I don't really like 5 minute glues, or even the 30 minute epoxies. They all seem weak by comparison, so they are never used in construction for anything that matters. |

Order you a small set of the QuickCure. It will change your mind about 5 minute epoxies. I now use it in places where I used to use TiteBond or wood glue. Just make sure you cut the spouts equal and draw your lines equal and mix well and it will cure hard. It is not that gummy kind of cure than Bob Smith and the other Hobby store variety gives you. You can even mix microballoons (and cabosil if needed) with it and sand it in an hour. It makes a great spot putty with enough microballoons or WEST SYSTEMS 410 Microlight. You do have only 5 minutes from the time the components touch. Probably only 4 minutes in reality. |

Guys, I've got the original Quickie 500 plans (Thanks John Gibson) scanned in tiff format I can send you. I've got them also drawn in CAD and am thinking about getting some kits laser cut. Even picked up a new in box K&B 8011 .40 with Semco muffler last week to play with. I think with a few small modifications the Quickie 500 could be competitive in Quickie 25. We will see!:D

I used to read a lot about Bob Smith and his smoking fast pylon ships when Formula One was a new event in the late 60’s and early 70’s. So it was a thrill to race him years later when he returned to racing. Beating him in a first round heat with a 1:12 (with a fourth flag take-off) convinced him to buy me for the Calcutta that year. I think he made $11 for every dollar spent. The following year, he even helped repair my wing’s leading edge during the SLO race. Really a great guy, but with no offense intended to the Reverend, his 5 minute epoxy remind me of:

Yep, Highplains I thinking it will be a fun project. I'm drawing up an exact copy and one that I will modify. I believe a little tweaking of that design may surprize a few people. Like Don said the one at last week's race dropped a few jaws!! It was actually 35+ years old too!! But again I believe much of the race is the guys thumbs on the stick:D

Without pulling out the kit to look at the plans, I think the fuselage is slightly oversized to current rules.
Flip one over, they really fly nice as a high wing. Now where did I put that old Fourmost mount? |

They were closely competitive with the 8011 K&B 40 and just slightly slower than the 424's of today, with the Rossis'. Not only were they great little race planes but great sport flyers as well.They were pretty tough to ,esp. to have had a built up wing. I've had lots of "Frankenstine" planes that flew perfect. With the advent of Zap ca. and 5 min. epx. that plane could be built very quickly. More than once, Mike Klutz would tear one up in Friday practice or the Sat. race, lock himself in the hotel room with a new kit ,2 rolls of Monokote ,ca. 5 min. music and 3 six packs of Cheerwine (it's a VERY sweet soda made in N.C.), and appear at 7 A.M. with a new,fast plane.D.Keats airplane was fast last Sat. and it is much wider and heavier than the others. It had been crashed and repaired more than once with Celastic !!!!!! Anybody remember that "stuff" ???? I think World Engines was the first to sell it. Anyway, it was cool to see on fly again. I have 3 new ones that I'll get to sometime.......................................... .................................................. .................................................. ........... john g. |

I got the TIF file from Bob. Like I said I'm picking up a set of plans today. But I went ahead and created PDF files that anyone should be able to take to a FedEx Office / FedEx Kinko's and get printed. The paper size is Architectural E ( 48"x36" ). I created both Portrait and Landscape versions of the plans, mainly so you can view them via your PDF viewer. I think you will want the Portrait for printing at the print shop, but takes both.
