RE: Clear Coat
Yes it is fuelproof to a certain amount of nitro. The 15% we use does not hurt it but i want to clear kote to gloss it up some moreand harden the finish to make it more ding resistant. The painters touch chips and dings fairly easy. The clear coat i was thinking of is polyurethane . I don't have it yet. wanted to run it by the forum first.

RE: Clear Coat
It was from my understanding that the Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Brand was not fuel proof at all.

RE: Clear Coat
I have not tried it but take a look at Minwax Polycrylic at most any hardware store.

RE: Clear Coat
I believe you mean Minwax Polyurethane. I used the polycrylic on the 3/4 oz cloth for surfacing.

RE: Clear Coat
I use the Minwax polyurethane clear gloss and it works pretty good over painters touch and ultracoat. Painters touch is about as fuel prof as ultracoat.
OOPS replace ultracoat with LustreKote. LustreKote and Painters touch seem to go on and cure about the same and have about the same prof against 15% fuel. Denis |
RE: Clear Coat
Yes, Jim I think you are correct.
Thanks, Slim |
RE: Clear Coat
Just get some Klaskote paint and forget about nitro.
I still have some cans of very old K&B (same as klaskote) that I am still using... stuff has a long shelf life. dan |
RE: Clear Coat
I have some gloss clear klasskote, but with winter setting in I won't be able to spray the model until at least next April.

RE: Clear Coat
I would normally get everything ready and wait for a reasonable day, however, seeing you are in Canada, I see your point about it being in April at the minimum. Seeing there will not be much good flying weather either... I would opt for spring when I can spray good paint outside and in the interim relax by drinking beer and vodka by the fire and try to keep the wife and kids amused for a few months!

RE: Clear Coat
Actually Leonard in the paint shop at workoffered to spray the model for me. I work for a contract fabricator (welding, lasers, milling etc). I might take him up on this if I can get the decal work on the plane. I'm just concerned of him shooting too much clear coat.

RE: Clear Coat
jim,
i would think you want a little extra clear coat. i do anyway as i'm going to spend some quality time sanding it smooth to a gloss finish. there are some airbrushing sites around that talk about how to do just that. |
