Default What color is the most visible in the air?

I`ve got a Sig Wonder brewing in the Garage and was thinking of doing a Knockoff of the Air Force Aggressor Scheme found on their F-15s (Twin Tails)

Was thinking of going a Yellow base with Flourescent Orange,,but may change to a better color scheme.

What is most visible that you like to view from the ground?

Thanks

For me the most visible has always been red and yellow. I have a small delta wing plane that will simply climb out of site. The underside of it is all yellow and there have been times that the only way I have found it is to put it in a spin as it comes down and I would look for the flashing yellow, found it every time like that!!!

Yellow is a good color for me as well. I think everyone is a little different though. For me contrasts and patterns also make a big difference in how well I can see the airplane.

Yellow with any contrasting dark color and a patch of white. Most of us color blind people can see yellow very well so anything darker and lighter tossed into the works is good.

High contrast works very well but I'm not a fan of red. At any distance it fades out to grey and then further away is almost invisible. On a small plane like this I wouldn't do red.

The neon florescent colors are more visible and easier for the eye to pick up. Must be a reason why road crews use it, right? I normally stay away from green because it is the color of foliage but had the opportunity to see a florescent green plane fly and visibility was no problem.

Go with your original color picks.

I have always liked Cub Yellow. Then contrast that with big stripes of dark blue or black.

I have tended toward red and yellow until my last build. It was a Don Muddigan Flying Machine which has an OS 55AX and only a 42 inch wing. I knew that when I flew it that it would get small in a hurry I used Ultracote Flourescent Pink on top and Safety Yellow on the bottom. Now, I can "see" it go out of sight But seriously, of all the covering colors I've used, that Flourescent Pink is the most visible.

Airbusdriver, I agree with you 100% on the pink. I also used the same Ultracoat Flouresent pink & it looks like the plane is a plugged in neon sign!!! It IS by far the most visible color i ever used.....Gene

Default RE: What color is the most visible in the air?

Many moons ago I got my hands on an article that talked about aircraft visibility. With this article was a graph, that the author said was the results of a study by the German Air Force rating color visibility under all conditions.

The top, most visible, colors on that chart are: luminous Orange, followed by White, then light Yellow. (Note: No flouresents were listed on the chart)

The article also pointed out when it comes to making models highly visible, modelers should include patterns of contrasting colors from other end of the spectrum. According to the graph these colors are; dark red, dark blue, brown, black, and dark green.

I like big black stripes on the bottom with white or yellow. If I cant see the stripes, I know I'm looking at the top of the plane.

I am just finishing up a Sig Wonder also.  I used blue, white, and neon pink Ultracote.

As others have said, CONTRAST is more important than COLOR.

A neon Pink airplane may be easy to see, but at a distance all you SEE is a big Pink dot.

Light colors will show up well against a dark background like mountains, and a dark plane will show up well in a light-colored sky, but neither will do well the other way around.

And the contrasting colors should be BOLD, skinny stripes or small checkerboards will blur at a distance:

I like a white base with red and blue trim. More blue on bottom than on top and big red wingtips

Top colors don't mater a lot but the bottom must contrrast. Most the time I have used stripes, in this case I tried circles and I must say, this plane was really easy to see at any distance.

Depends on your eyes too. My eyes see yellow and blue really well.

Putting yellow next to orange is a bad idea for me. They are too close to the same shade. Can't tell the difference in the air.

I usually do some kind of stripes on the bottom of the wings. It's boring, but it works. Large stripes - at least 2.5" or 3" wide.

1/2" checkerboards don't show up worth a darn. If you want checkerboards on the bottom of a wing and you want to actually SEE them in the air - go with 4" squares or larger.

It's all about contrasting colors. Don't put pink next to red. Don't put blue next to black or purple.
