Planefreak, I don't know if you are new to the hobby or not, but this has been around many times. My take? I quit using Monokote years ago when I run into trouble trying to shrink the white. I am a dedicated user of Ultra-Cote now.

There are lots of "what's up with Monokote" threads. This one ran on for 6 months in 2010
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9717398

Some people have great success with it, others refuse to use it.

You are so clever. It won't be long before the lakes thaw and you can use those worms for fishing

I don't know if it has been brought up before, but something I have learned is, when you go to the hobby store to purchase your Monokote; you need to pop a hole in the end of the tube and smell, if there is an overwhelming strong smell of the Monokote, take it home, it will cover very well. Now if there is no smell, or little smell, you are going to be unhappy with the results. Also if the backing almost falls off, then throw it in the trash can. In my experience; I have found that 6' rolls are much more likely to have problems then the 25' rolls for some reason, in fact I just through away 2ea. 6' rolls of Monokote that a friend gave me at the end of a covering job I was trying to finish. We noticed there was almost no smell, but I decided I would give it a try, after all, I only had my ailerons left to cover, and already bought 5 ea. 25' rolls. I ironed down one bottom and before I could do the top, it began to go to hell, so I took a blade, gave it a slice, peeled it off, and bought one more 25' roll.

Yes....it is not what it used to be for sure. You have to change how you use it somewhat, experience will be the best teacher here. I love Ultracote as well but I like the color variety of Mono and its shine.

Oh boy, not again! [X(]

I don't have any problems with Top Flite Mono so far. Mono is for people who know how to cover, and Ultra is for people who quite don't know how to cover. Just Kidding! [:-]

I was trying to figure out what to do with the 10-15 rolls of MK I had lying around and I was thinking it would be cool to just unroll it and tack it to the walls of my shop as a sort of abstract art form! At least it would be colorful and be of some use [8D]

I must admit I bought a couple of rolls dirt cheap at a swap meet the other day. I figured for the price I paid I could dream that it would work

I do think the smell test might be interesting. Never thought of smelling to see if the product was "stale" but I usually put my MK in PVC tubes with caps on so it really could not go bad unless it is already bad.

Have any of you ever tried the covering from Hobbyking? It's dirt cheap and it comes in 5 meter rolls! I though about trying some of it out, and if it doesnt work no big loss right. from what i've read it sounds like descent covering! Any thoughts? :/

Monokote has changed in the way it goes on for sure, but it is still my first choice of all the plastic films because if applied correctly, it still looks the best of them all. I just finished covering this airframe last week and I had to iron, stretch and float some for this scheme.

Monocoat all the way. Easier for me to use, More colors and better looking colors that will not fade from sunlight exposure.

Tried Ultracoat about ten years ago for a year or so's worth of airplanes but the results were not pleasing.

Ultra cote sinks better but tends to sag under hot sun. Monokote does not shrink as much but does not sagg so much under hot sun. I like both and use them for different purposes.

That's what I do. I just tried Solartex and man that is good stuff! But, it doesn't look right for the metal skinned type aircraft. (IMHO) I like Mono for its toughness, I like Ultra for its ease of use.

Minnflyer is trying to cover a can...........i tried to cover a model with Monokote a couple years ago and gave up........this after building and flying since 1963 as a jr.
i used the very first roll of transparent red back when it came to our hobby shop, and the stuff today is nowhere the same.

like others have posted, give Ultracote a try, and it'll build your confidence back up.

Have covered Cans, Birdcages and even model airplanes with Monocoat just fine and easier to use. No in 1963 I was still stuck in the stubborn gotta use tissue, silkspan or silk and dope and foolishly avoided the much maligned 'plastic' covering untill about 1995 and since have never looked back. That with only a short period of messin with Ultracoat but soon when back to the trusty Monocoat.

Its Not like 'everyone' has posted in favor of that Ultracoat stuff.

Here is a picture of me about 1963 and you wont see any plastic film.

The other picture shows monocoat clears in blue, yellow and RED all within five years old and doing just fine in tough conditions.

John,
there was no plastic film in 1963..........it came out around 1969, and i remember it being much easier to use.

our free flights were all tissue and dope.....which is an art in itself that i see no newbie ever enjoying.

I covered many airplanes with tissue, silk, Dacron and dope over the years. My favorite is Stits covering system, but the Monokote is just lighter for that kind of finish I am looking for these days. One day I just might go back and build a few scale birds again and I will use Stits for sure.

John, you don't have enough planes in that garage of yours.

Since we're talking about covering cans with worms in it, bird houses and planes, do you think Mono will cover the rust on my car?

Sorry guys it seems I have stirred a hornets nest (indeed I have an aversion to worms please) with only one other poster admitting use at all of Monocoat. Now I think there is even a majority out there who do like Monocoat but avoid posting on these hate monocoat threads that pop up periodicallyl.

Just my own speculation but like it or not there frequently is politically correct answers on many threads and that causes folks to not post who actually be of differing opinions.

Now macdonna of course I cannot speak for your problems and of course you may have had them. Possibly a bad batch or possible far too old I do not know and I am not going to belabor the fact. However what I can do is should you actually want to come through here I will see thay you get a full dose of Northern Arizona hospitality and love to have you come and fly and you can do that almost any time of the year. Bring you own airplanes or if ya can.t travel with airplane I will supply just about any type that you want to fly. That is a serious offer and applys to anyone who chooses to PM me to connect.

Take note Summerwind that selection will include an eclectic collection also of old timers covered with Monocoat and a few with silkspan (thats when the mood hits me) but no Ultracoat.

All I can say about the white mono is I never use it. It is a very poor color for the local time of day when most flying occurs here (early AM) this for other reasons. The visual atmospherics makes white the worst color for most to use.

Oberst concerning my garage, it contains an average of now of around 35 airplanes that are plug and play except a few controlliners which I do not normally have to plug. This number keeps me happy and provides a wide spectrum of types to fly that keeps me even happier and sharper. This number allows me to also fly just bout everyday and the more my body deteriates that becomes even more important to me. Also just bout every day I can come home from the field if'n I don,t motormouth to much on this net and Build-Assemble-Bash or just clean up some old airplane(s)

John
