I run my filters external of the tank.......but I don't think there would be a problem with running a filter in the tank.....

45 years of flying and have never used a filter on the plane. I filter the fuel from the can.

Either or. Makes no difference. There is also a small screen filter inside the carb of a gas engine. I'm pretty hit and miss when it comes to filters but over time if one of my gassers starts running funny I take a little look inside the carb and have found the screen was full of crud. I like the Crap Trap filters so I can see what is going on. They are just a clear plastic tube with two mesh filters inside. They work great.

Only two filters?????[:-]

The internal filter has the additional capability of helping eliminating air bubbles; however, it might be hard on the walls of the tank.
More filtering surface = less flow resistance.

The external filter is easier to open and inspect and clean, but it can suck air if it is not hermetic.
Less filtering surface (specially when working in a horizontal position) = more flow resistance.

I use walbro in tank pickup/filters, helps with fuel foaming on gassers and filters the fuel anyway. they only cost a couple of bucks at a mower center.

Cheers
