Default Prop Suggestion for OS .46 AX on an Extra 300S

I hvae an Extra 300Swith a 56"wingspan with a not quite broken in yet OS46AXmotor. The plane weighs about 6 pounds in all up condition.I have tried a 10x6 and an 11x6 APCprops and they booth don't really let the motor rev out, it sounds like it's plugged up or something. It flies the plane, the climb out is very dull though. It will barely fly at half throttle and at full throttle it will get some speed going but as soon as Igo vertical it just kind of fades out fast and Ifind my stall point rather quickly.

It is still quite rich for breaking in. Should Itake the baffle out for more power?

What fuel are you running? You might want to try a few tanks of 30% heli fuel and see if that wakes up that 46...Gene

It will get better as the engine breaks in but to answer your questions. Take the baffle out if you intend to continue using the stock muffler. I would use a Nelson or Jett muffler myself. put on an APC 11X5, Enya #3 plug and run 20% nitro. It's been a couple years but I always enjoyed flying at the North Vegas Field.

You need to break the motor in, it takes a while. OS engines run great out of the box, but they do continue to make power as they get used. I had a .46AX that eventually spun a 12x5 at around 12,000 rpm.

If you like 3D flying, try the 12.25x4.75 or whatever it is. If you want speed, try a 10x6 or 10x7. 11x6 is a good all around prop.

A lot of it depends on tuning and fuel too.

Ditto. That is what I run. If the engine is not broken in, add 3oz of caster to a gallon of fuel and burn it all. You should be in pretty good shape when it is gone.

The 12.25 X 3.75 or the 11 x 5 is probably going to be your best bet if you're tryingto do much vertical with it. I do mostly sport flying and find the 11 x 6 to be the best for my style of flying. With that said, I do have one plane with an old .46 fx that likes a 10x6 best. It really winds up the rpms with that propthough.

Hi!
11x6, 11,5x6, 12x4 , 12x5 even 12x6 if the OS AX .46 is as good as the ASP .46 (Kyosho GX.46) APC or RAM! Those are the best props.

I had the 46ax on a mojo 40 and found the best prop for me was the APC 11x4. It really wound up but it performed very well and still does after 30 gallons or so.

Went to buy a 12x4 and both hobby shops were out of them. I wound up pulling the baffle out of the muffle and drilling the stinger out to 1/4". Picked up 400 RPM just like that.

Looks like the North Field?? Your in the ball park so I won't get into prop sizes, testing is the only way to discover what you like. Last week I was at Nice Twice and there were a couple of 12X4s on the wall or table. Could have been Hobby Town? I was going through props at both stores but looking at bigger props. I no longer use the smaller engines but when a student is looking to buy one I now show them the OS .55AX. It's a lot more bang for the buck. You can borrow a tank of the higher nitro to try, you can pick up a couple hundred RPM but I don't bother with it. After a couple of tanks of fuel you should be leaning the engine a little as it breaks in, you will notice the engine running a bit different from flight to flight so it's telling you something. In our weather conditions it doesn't take long for an engine to break in.

Yes Gray Beard, McCool Airfield it is!

I pulled the baffle and opened it all the way up with a dremel and put it back in (the muffler needed the flange to fit right) I put a larger diameter exhaust rubber extension thingy on the stinger replacing the smaller one that I had on there, and I also drilled out the stinger to 1/4". WOW!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! My friend tached it and picked up 400-500 RPM just by those 3 modifications alone.

I flew the plane with the 11X6 with these free mods (I had the extension in a box) and I can't believe how much these things woke this motor up, it now pulls like crazy where before it just seemed to be plugged up.

I did order a 12X4 APC from a new hobby shop right by my house called 5 Star Hobbies. The guy who owns it is really cool and is just getting started, go check him out if you get a chance. He's at Rancho and Craig.
Ialso was flying knife edge and doing some cool maneuvars when it stalled and went into a bad spin, 3 full rotations before Icould pull it out with only about 10 feet from terra firma. Ihave since added 3/4 oz. of weight to the nose and lateral balance is spot on.

The deflectors can rob you of power too, I try not to use them. Perhaps a nice Pitts muffler would deflect the snot and add a bit more thrust. That is a nice looking plane. I only get over to your field for the IMAC but have met a lot of nice folks there. I get lost every time I go there too, more and more homes being built in the area.

Thanks for the compliment on the plane! Please say hi anytime you are in the area and want to go fly.

(I have to use a deflector or I will have snot all over the place. A pitts would be nice, but no extra $$ right now. Will give a flight report tomorrow, going early AM to try and beat the wind/heat.

Good power and MUCH more stable with the 3/4 oz. of weight in the nose. Not sluggish dog like stable, but planted and predictable table and would still perform manuevers nicely.
