Default Duel battery hook up

Right now I am running a single 4.8v, 600mAh battery. I am wondering if I can hook up another battery with a Y cable with the same mAh rating and not create any problems with the receiver and servos. Please give me your ideas and tips, thanks

The best way is to add a second switch for the second battery. The second lead can be plugged into any empty channel on your RX. If you don't have an empty channel, then use a Y with one end of the Y going to the servo and the other end going to the switch lead. The male end of the Y then goes into the RX.

The Cherokee is electric. I have a ESC with built in 5v BEC. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=3727

As you know if the ESC fries you lose the motor and your receiver power.

I also got a second 5v UBEC to run strait from the main battery. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10312

I'm going to wire them to this switch. If the I lose one of the BECs hopefully I'll still have control of the plane. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=16811

I'm curious what you're flying a 600mah battery pack in that you think you need redundant batteries.

The battery is in my Decathalon (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBGZS&P=7). I charge the battery before I fly and after 3 or 4 flights I check the battery and it is down to 50-60% The battery is only 2 years old. I dont know if the battery has gone bad already or if I just wear it down from flying so much.

Replacing the pack would be the simple $20 solution

1. How do you know the battery is down 50-60%. Do you cycle it and check capacity? You can't determine battery capacity with a volt meter.
2. 3 or 4 flights on a 600 mah battery and have 50% left is actually very good. It appears the battery is OK.
3. You don't really need redundant batteries for more flying time, just buy a larger capacity battery, like post 9 says. Hydrimax are excellent batteries.
4. If you do decide on 2 batteries, keep it simple. another battery and switch harness is all you need. Just plug it into any unused servo port. Don't complicate things with more electronic devices that can fail/or cause problems.
5. To check your existing battery. Charge it and cycle it. This will tell you capacity at full charge. Fly your 3-4 flights, then discharge the battery without recharging. This will tell you how much capacity is remaining. The difference in the 2 numbers is what you used in the 3-4 flights. Divide by the number of flights and you have the battery capacity you use in each flight. Check it once every month or 2 and you can tarck the health of your battery.
6. You don't need electronic switches/regulators etc.

I needed added weight for my LT40. Had 2 1500 mAh NiMH packs and a Y harness. You have a 3000 mAh "pack". Charging is different issue. I use a combo MPI 3-wire switch/charge port. Can't charge the extended pack with this config. I Have to disconnect one pack from the Y and then charge both independently. Alt config would include a 2nd charge port / switch and connect each battery to its own charge port with the Y connecting the output side of each charge port. To charge both switches off. To operate both switches on.

I can make you a "D" cell Nicd, 5,000Mah pack. They weigh 1 1/2 lbs. eac. i put two of them in the nose of my Corsair, 3 lbs. and still needed to add one more lb. They ard 30.00 each plus about 5.00 shipping. I make and sell alot of the sub C, 2200 Mah. I am not sure what they weigh. 6 volt is 22.00 and 4.8 volt are 20.00. Let me know if I can help. Thanks, Nick [email protected]

We CAN NOT hook up two identical battery packs parallel since their voltage is NOT identical, therefore they oppose each other constantly.
This called BUCKING VOLTAGE.

Yeah I'd like to hear this too.

It would sure mess up my diabolical plot to use two 5S packs to get 10S for my SweetN' Low Stick.

What's worse is I'm planning on two 5000mah 5S packs in series to get 10S and then two of these two 5S packs in parallel to get 10,000mah.

Man I'll have voltage bulking all over the place with these 20 lipo cells.

As long as the chemistry is the same, i.e. Nicad to Nicad, NiMh to NiMh, etc. and the cell count is the same, no problem in connecting them in parallel. Even if they both have slightly different voltages (one more charged than the other) you can still do it as they will quickly equalize. They can even be of different capacity, i.e. a 600mah and a 1200mah. Just do not try to charge them in parallel if they are Nixx, okay to charge Pb or Li in parallel, even if different capacities as long as the cell count is the same.

I would not use a Y and 2 batteries unless I just didn't have a choice....no open ports on my receiver......I would disconnect the batteries from the Y and charge each seperatly.
Instead I would use a second switch and plug into any open port on your receiver.....this is still parallel.
Or just get a bigger capacity battery, but you need a bigger capacity charger.
3 or 4 flights on a 600mAh battery isn't too bad......a second battery adds weight.
Let us know what you decide to do and how it works for you.

Why not just replace the battery with another one that is charged ??? Cheaper , easy and no big deal, you probably needed a break anyway . ENJOY !!! RED
