Prop size 55ax
Any recomendations on prop size for the 55ax would be appreciated. I'm looking for as much power on the lower end of the throttle as possible

A delightful package on my CMP Arf Ultimate has proven to be a 55AX using an APC 12 X 8.
Gives a good turn of speed the little ship needs with still excellent vertical.

We had an incident last week though. I showed up early and the not only were the gates lock and chain gone but so was the fourteen foot Farmall steel gate.
Two hours later we found the gate at one of the two scrap metal yards in town. Seems all the folks selling scrap at these yards are secretly photo'ed as well as the vehicle lisense plates. Best part of all is the yards people said these fellows broke out the rear window on their pickup loading the thing.
They were paid four bucks for the gate! Seems these fellows are up for all sorts of stuff after the disscussion I had with the city attorneys office yesterday.

RE: Prop size 55ax
In my experience, with this engine,it depends on what kind of plane you have. And your abilitys! I have two of these engines and love them .they run very well with apc12x6,12x8 props I think,I also run omega feuls 15%-25% fuel in them. this much I can tell you, these are not bottom end motors.they make the best power from mid range ,on up.Again ,if your plane is more light and aerobatic, then the 12x8 would work good for you.On the other hand,if what you have is heavier and slower [perhaps say, a .46 size mustang],then 12x6 would probably be better. On my seagull .46 decathalon, I tried sevral prop and fuel combinations, but what gives me the best performance is 12x6 with 15% fuel.On the other hand,on my GP u can do .46,I use 12x8 with 25% and a MAC tuned pipe. OUTSTANDING EVERYTHING!!!!.. But I do run a much richer setting on the high speed needle, seagull decathalon,2 1/4 rich[300rpm from peak],and on the ucd set it at 2 7/8rich[300rpm from peak]. So as you can see there are alot of variables! More info about your plane would help, but as you may already know,4strokes make power on the botom, and 2strokes scream it out on the topend.

Heck I'd try to see if anyone filmed it, then I would have sent it to "America's Dumbest Criminals" TV Show.

Why do you run a 12x6 - 12x8 on a 46 sized engine ( big block 46 size ). do you run such a big prop to keep noise down? The 12x8 is too much for the 65AX.

A 12 inch prop would be a normal size for any .60 size engine. If your .65 can't swing one you may have a problem?
JOHN, they got one of the aluminum bench tops off the bleachers at Bennett field and had another one loosened up and ready to go.

RE: Prop size 55ax
yes that is true gray just wondering if these guys are going with what the MFG says which to me is in the low end of power for this engine.
Yes my 65AX will swing that prop around 12,000 or so which is normal.
For the 55 i would say a 11X7 is the max size but that is just me. i have seen LA40's turn a 15x4 APC at 6,500 and fly a plane very well although with a slow spool up lol

RE: Prop size 55ax
Airraptor be aware there are four recomended prop sizes for the 55AX, not the 46AX and not the 65AX those are not the engines in question. Also the 55 is decidedly not just a "Big Block" 46. It uses an entirely revamped carburation system and I beleve the port timing is also different, its a different engine. In fact the 46AX is a very different engine than all the other AX series.
The four sizes right out of the OS book are: 12x7 and 12x8 or 13x6 and 13x7 period. There are no other manufacturer size recommendations even for breakin.
Like you for the sixty ones I tended to always start out with an 11x7 however for this little airplane all that did was make a lot of noise. I also tryed all four of the reccomended sizes too. Guess what for this little ship yes its tightly cowled (I always pay carefull attention to the cooling tract) the 12x8 has proven absolutely delightfull and perfect for this combo reliability has been exceptional and never misses a long taxi back. I cannot and wont give you an RPM figure since I always tune to a pinch. I will only say for this airplane it gives needed extra speed and vertical is still superlative which includes vertical reaccelerations from a hovering stop.
Unfortunately the OP never gave an airplane type so prop recomendation all become somewhat clouded and thats why I posted the picture.
I do my own testing of props for all my aircraft and never rely on these forums as well as recommendations from me mates. Heck I sometimes do pay attention to what manufacturers say in there manuals though, try reading yours sometime.
So my recomendation as per manufacturer specs as well as my own tests for a smallish airplane that needs a good turn of speed as well as vertical the 12x8 is an excellent choice for the 55AX.

Hey GB ya I like to make me own props once in a while only it won,t be from those old bench tops at Bennet field up there in Vegas though. That material has been permanently etched from the ghosts of past TOC wannabes passin gas and it tends to structurally weaken the material

Well, that and the park benches are made of concrete and the bleacher seats are 1/4 inch aluminum as I recall.
I would have to look at the prop on my friends .55AX that's pulling around a 60 Pulse to say what we ended up with. I recall spending most of the day switching props for it until he found that magic number. We were looking for slow and pull though.
I'm almost out of the smaller props, mater of fact my prop box is almost empty. When we had the swap meet out on the LB the fellow with a truck load of props didn't show up. I was going to re-supply. For someone that doesn't use anything smaller the a 15 inch myself I sure go through the small props fiddling around with friends engines. You know, replace it when you get more doesn't seem to work.

The Rest of The Story-
Sure use to love that old radio show. Any way I got a PM from Grey Beard asking about the rest of the Great Kingman Gate caper and if justice has been done. Hope you don,t mind me answering here GB since I did post it here and maybe some others would like to hear the rest of this somewhat unbelevable story.
The day after the gate was stolen and we had found and identified it a warrent was issued for this fellow of couse his id was already in hand from the scrape yard photos and lisense plate photo.
The DA and the police really did not need to go to all that trouble. The next day the perpetrator marchs on into the cop shop on his own. Seems this airhead who is just under 18 years old was living on his daddys child support and the daddy was a bit of a flake (big surprise). He wanted to file charges on the daddy for non support!
Well heck seems to file these charges he's got to tell the police his name, imagine that. Of course the hot warrent pops right up and he was escorted directly to his new home and introduced to his new daddy.
There was also a 15 year old accomplice who the 18 year old of couse immediately fingered, imagine that!
The fifteen is in juvanile detention and the 18 is about to be tried as an adult.
I received the victems rites paperwork yesterday He is going up for 18 counts of felony theft. This includes all metal thefts and many were bronze water main caps from city sites all over the region
I hope he enjoys Sheriff JOES balony sandwichs and tent city down in Tucson. I hear tell its been running a nice Balmy 110 for a while now.

I didn't mind it getting posted here at all. What a wonderful story and such a sweet ending. I was telling some of my retired cop buddies the story and they wanted to know the ending. They were telling me a bunch of the laws that were broken during the theft and sale but it seems they missed a few.
