Default How to tell if a glow charger is working-slightly smashed in mail.

I ordered this:
http://www.amazon.com/Racers-Edge-18.../dp/B002PADSKC
When I got it, the electric prongs on the charger were smashed. They werent loose but it wasnt posssible to make them straight without tools. There is a red light on the charger. When I plug it into the wall charging the glow starter, the light doesnt come on. Does anyone know if it only comes on once it's charged or if my charger is broken and ill have to send it back? I can't try it on my plane because I dont have any fuel for it at the moment.

Iwouldn't even bother with the issue and have Amazon.com replace the damaged unit...

They are usually very good at doing so... Least that was my experience with them in the past...

Just my 2 pennies worth...

I am not 100% sure, but would guess the red lite should come on to show power to the unit.

More than likely when the prongs were bent so bad, they broke contact inside the unit.

good luck, I know its a bad thing as you have to send it back.

If you have a volt meter you could plug the unit into 110V and check to see if you have about 2V on the charging end. I can not plug mine in right now, will later .

That lite only indicates that there is current flowing and has nothing to do with charge state.

Those chargers are fully potted and repair is not possible, Send it back!

Can you not take the glow plug out and test it with your new igniter?

I just went out and plugged in one of my driver chargers, the light came on when I clipped on a driver. To see if it's charging the battery or not I use a multi meter and see what the voltage of my battery is, next day I check it again to see it it charged up or not. If it does charge the battery then it's still up to you if you want to send it back or not. Another choice is to send it back and just buy a driver with charger from your LHS. Just a thought, I never mail order anything I can just buy from my hobby shop. When you figure in shipping it's more then the local tax.

Its just a piece of junk send it back while you still can. Any wall wort type charger that the lite does not function but still charges is going to cause grief at some point later on.

On a side note I keep old cylinder heads with plugs in them in my flight box and at home this just for quick tests of glow ignitors.

You paid for a functioning product, return it.

The light will only come on when you have the battery being charged connected then it will stay on until you unplug the battery or the charger from the wall.
