Did not see this posted on RCU yet.
Approximately 20 new in crate Spitfires have been located in Burma. They were buried in WWII to be hidden from the enemy. Here is a link to one of the news articles:

I saw that on another forum. What a great treasure!
The crime will be if they ship them back to England they will destroy the wing guns. I guess it's a small price to gain that many airframes.

As much as I enjoy hearing of finding long-lost treasures, we need to be realistic here. I kinda doubt that these wood and fabric airplanes will be in mint condition after being in buried storage for nearly 70 years in one of the wettest climates in the world.

If you do a search on the internet you will find multiple hits for more info. Can't wait for the documentary! I remember seeing the documentary about Glacier Girl a number of years back and then had the chance to get up close to her at WWII Weekend in Reading PA. The plane looks better than it most likely was when it came off the assembly line - absolutely beautiful restoration job. Hopefully these spits follow the same path.
I realized after the fact that I posted this in this forum - not the Warbirds forum where there are at least two other threads.....

There is alot of difference between frozen in ice..and buried in a wet climate. I hope that those airplanes are preserved.

Considering that they were hastily buried to keep an overrunning enemy from finding them, I doubt that they had ample time to properly preserve them for 67 years of burial!
Kinda sheds some doubt on that "They may be in mint condition" prediction.
I'm not trying to be a pessimist. I'm just being realistic.

These were buried after the final whistle H5487. Supposedly Mk XIV, never unpacked, still wrapped and un-needed. They weren't even worth sending back, at the time.

This could be the coolest thing in years involving WW2 machinery , or airplanes of any type...
Sounds like they were practically prepped to be buried for long term.. fingers crossed ...
now ..... about all those supposed German Birds in underground tunnels

Not to mention complete planes. Not holding my breath on either, but we can always hope.

I understand there are very few Daimler-Benz inverted vee engine blocks remaining. A cache of those would be a remarkable find.
