Attaching fuel line from tank to engine.

Attaching fuel line from tank to engine.
What tools do you use to attach the fuel line from the tank to the engine (engine mounted). I find this one of the most fustrating jobs after the plane is complete. How long do you normally have your aluminum or brass tubing protuding from the tank?

I use a pair of doctor hemostats for the job. It works very well. When i put the brass or aluminum in I usually leave about a half in out from the motor side. Hopefully this helps.

Hi!
I don't use any tool at all ! Why?
All I use is two 3mm screws (or the equalent) to tap the fuel lines where I have a cowled in engine.
I don't have long brass tubings at all, certainly not protruding beond the fire wall. Have a look att the last picture!

Fingers? Mine are wimpy little accountant fingers and pretty dexterous. I Nylon cable tie the fuel line to the tank and usually have 3/4" of tube outside the stopper. Some of my tanks just have 3/8" barbs.
Like OldScaleGuy I pretty much use a three-line two-klunk set up exclusively anymore - even in open nose models.

If I think ahead, which is rare, I can attach 3 fuel lines, each approx 8 long to the tank before I install the engine. When I forget to attach the lines ahead of time I usually have to use my trusty needle nose pliers and snake them around. I also use a 3 line system with only the vent/overflow without a clunk. My tubing from the tank is about 1/2 to 3/4 inches long.

On cowled in planes, i use a three line system, the third line is used to fill and empty the tank. I also use a clunk on this line to insure complete emptying after flying.

I think maybe we are mis-understanding your question though. Are you asking about how we set up the fuel tanks and lines?

Thanks Grey Beard. Shannon1978 got it right the first time. I'm to concerned about the number of lines, but how to get my fingers down to install the fuel tubing on the copper or aluminum lines from the tank. I picked up a 7" needle nose pliers (smooth edges) from Princess Auto today (Canada).
The local hobby shop had a Swoosh hanging up. Nice looking plane.
My next problem is the bifocals. Everything small gets out of focus.

1. Use a two foot length or more of your fuel line feed both ends from the front through the firewall and out to the wing compartment. Attach to the tank in your hand. Cut and identify which is the the muffler line and which is the carb line in front of the firewall and install the tank from the wing compartment while pulling the lines through. After its in shorten the lines and install where they go.
2. Its called old age and we learn to deal with it.

Hi!
Why do you want to use a needle nose plier to get to the fuel line??
The fuel lines should be secured to the brass tubing permanently! You fill up either through removing the fuel line from the carb nipple (Two line tank) or from using a third line to the tank.
