But if you want to be safe you should join the AMA and a local club and fly in accordance with their rules. As far as I'm concerned, this is equivalent to a license and you should get one.

Up here, you NEED to have your MAAC, which is teh insuring body up here. Similar to AMA.
Most feilds I've been to, you need to have your 'wings' When you 'graduate' from flight school (have passed teh flight test) you get a set of wings. Which are usually clipped to your insurance badge / memebship badge.
It's sort of a licence. the insurance is more of a lisence..

As stated, you don't need a licence like you do to drive a car, but as the others said, join a club and get with a good instructor, and he can teach you how to do it right and how not to crash. Clubs are fun for the friendship and to have people to fly with. AMA is required by some clubs, but not all. If you have to have it to fly at a club, then get it. AMA is secondary to homeowners ins. If you crash into something or someone, it is nice to have. It is not all that much to pay, and if you ever need it, you will be glad you had it.

The short answer is yes, but there are some things to consider. Where is the closest flying field? The AMA recommends not locating flying fields closer than three miles from each other. If someone else is using the same radio channel as you in the same area it may cause you to loose control of your plane, or you may cause someone else to loose control of their plane.
Also you may want to check to see if there are any local restrictions on flying from your house. I have flown from my house for many years, but I live in a rural area and my backyard is a hay field. There are a few guys that also use my field and last year we chartered a club with the AMA, but there is no requirement to do that.
Check with your insurance agent and make sure your homeowner insurance will cover flying from your house. Most do, but better safe than sorry.

And unless you have at least 30 or 40 square miles of land for a back yard, keep in mind, if you lose control it could come down in someone else's yard and kill their kid. (Yes, these things HAVE killed people.)
Join the AMA, join a local club, get an instructor.
