Default Prop Safety Hub required???

Does AMA safety rules still require glow engines or gas or electric to have either a spinner or a prop safety hub such as Higley sells?
Thanks for any help.

I don't think they have changed the rules just don't pay any attention to them. At one time some one sold the AMA nuts and did recommend using them.

I thought it was just for combat and pylon racing. Can't find any document  mentioning it .

It was many years ago that they had this and I think it got swept under the carpet.

You have to put something on there to hold the prop on.
What's so hard about using something that is on the safe side?

I intend to be safe at all times and have always used either a safety prop nut as sold by Harry Higley or a spinner. There is nothing hard about using one of either kind if the prop shaft is long enough, then it is necessary to purchase a short shaft adapter to accomodate the spinner or nut. I found what I needed at Tower Hobbies and used it. Some one told me that it was not a requirement any more and I was asking if someone could tell me if it were true, I did not ask for a smart remark.

Silver,

I'm sorry if it came across as a smart remark.
It was intended as a suggestion.

You original question, though submitted as a query,
could easily be construed as a justification to not act in a safe manner.

Here is the link to the main safety code.
Prop nuts and spinners are not mentioned.
However, there are codes for specific areas of interest that may require it.

Good Luck,

My wife tells me I am a grumpy old man, probably she is right, so please excuse me for my own smart remark. Words once said can't be gotten back. Sorry. I appreciate the link.

I haven't flown glow in awhile, but I know people would typically double nut for safety on four cycle motors..

I literally watched a four cycle back fire throw the prop and it SLAPPED the guy starting it on the face, it could have easily went thru his eye, cheek, or chest. I have seen them come off and run across the ground and hit a flight box as well.

I hope I never see anyone hurt badly...

Silver Flier You can take back the words with 'edit' ;-)  I make my own acorn nuts but drill through all the way in case the props are thinner, better than the blind holes.  I don't know if that would meet 'code' but the starter works and I don't have to fiddle with washers and spinners.

The only place I have seen requirements for 'some sort of rounded spinner or safety cover on the propeller shaft' is in competition guidlines.
One example is page 3, section 3.4.2 of http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/2...14RCCombat.pdf

There is no similar requirement in the general safety code. On a few of our models we just use the prop nut and lock nut that come on our engines. Others have various spinners, hubs, or aorn nuts.
