Default fuel filter on smallengines

They say its wise to put a filter between the tank and the engine ,,but there is so little room to install them ie on a os 46,,55,61etc,, what filter do you use ? I have several types,,,buying the smallest I can find,,but at a loss where to install it.

Hey tazzzz. I just use a filter on my pump. Sullivan "crap trap". Rinse the tanks out once in a while.

I just use a ceramic filter in my fuel can. But if you want to be anal one could put an automive in-line filter after the fuel pump.

Pretty much the same here. I do flush out the tanks before I assemble them to make sure there is no flashing inside from the molding process. If the fuel is filtered before it gets to the tank there is no problem. Crap Trap for me too plus another small one on the bottom of the pick up line in the can. When I flew from a grass/weed field I had more problems with weed seeds getting into the carb, then I started using a carb air filter.

Hmm, Is this another one of those "they said" threads?
Got one in the can and that's it. Also got 900 feet of compacted desert hardpan (dirt) and that has not been a problem for most of us here.

And for the rest of you....It hasbeen a problem?

I have always kept my fuel stuff clean! I use a filter in my gas and nitro bottles, in the pickup line. I was every so oftengetting dirt, even small parts of grass in my airplane tank. The only waywas getting into the fuel line before I hooked it to the plane, or back on to the fuel bottle, or in through the pressure line on the muffler. When I would drain my tank with my fuel bump, it would get on the wrong side of the filter, and be pushed into another tank.

Sometimes crap just happens.

Like I said I have one in the can, sir.

In addition I can think of no one that uses them elsewhere at our field so no there is no "rest of you"

I have never used one on the plane.

There is one on the pump though that I use to fill the plane.

Flying toy airplanes for 55 years now.

I use a crap trap on my long line that comes off the pump and one of the small two piece aluminum filters inside the pick up that is in the can. If you filter your fuel before it gets into the planes tank there is no reason for a filter on the plane. Once in a long while I do have to clean the in can filter.

+1 another 45 year pattern guy
filter in the fuel can, I've never used one in the airplane...
(EDIT.. wait, I do actually remember having a combination fuel filter / clunk... at least 25 years ago.. as I recall I simply happened to have it on hand.)
I didn't notice a difference and haven't used one since.
