Super Sportster kit

Great Planes made 5 different Super Sportsers. Their biggest kit they called a Super Sportster .90-1.20. I have one assembled in my shop that i flew 15 years ago. But I am not sure of the wing span. Their 60 size was much smaller than that so you must have the 90-1.20. There is an easy way to tell in the stab. the big one has a built up tail all the rest have a tail made of solid balsa. This is also the weak area in the design. I would put flying wires on the stab if you are going to push the limits of the airframe.

To my knowlegde Great Planes never kitted an 81" version. The largest kitted version was the .90-1.20 and i believe it was around 71" wingspan. My .60 SS is 61" wingspan. The Giant Super Sportster is a 82" wingspan but it is only offered in an ARF.skeeter

Air Flair has a Prime Sports, at 84" http://www.airflair.com/flaircat1.html#PC-300 To me, it looks like a GP Sportster. It does have a sheeted foam wing, instead of built up construction.

Seems to me that Great Planes had an 80 inch kit at one time that was IMAA legal. Then they dropped the big kit and a couple years later came out with it as an ARF. I would ask Bill Baxter or phone Tower to make sure if it's important to you. Bax can be asked directly in the OS engine support forum.

Nope, Super Sprtster, I have the giant scale Ultra Sport 1000 kit out in the shop I'm selling. Anyone looking for one just email or PM me. It's new in Box, I have looked at the plans and instructions but haven't removed any of the wood or parts. Once removed I could have never gotten it back in the box!!! I never saved any of the old tower big catalogs but I'm pretty sure GP had the SS in a giant scale. Best thing to do is ask Bax. He's younger then me and has a much better memory.

Not saying your wrong I just never saw one besides the new giant scale ARF that GP has now. I am now getting the itch to get my 90-1.20 size out of moth balls. It just needs battery pack and a good once over. :-) It is such a good lloking plane in the air.
The OP has not been back anyway so the point may be moot.

Guys, I need to apologize to all of you. I ,made a typing error and did not notice until now. It is a 71 inch span, not 81. It does have a built up tail, so I guess Skeeter nailed it. Sorry for the confusion.

Dave,
Sorry, that post came out WAY wrong!!! sorry about that.
JollyPopper,
Then what you have is either a Great Planes kit built Super Sportster 90/120 (72" wingspan) or a RCM planes built Super Sportster 90/120 (72" wingspan). Both are identical as Great Planes' kit is identical to the RCM plans (they hold the license to manufacture that kit from the plans. Individuals can still build from the plans though) built plane.
If you need the manual you can download it from from Great Planes' website here:

As with Dave above, I have a set of plans that I could get copies made if you need them. I have a full kit on the shelf and now that you've mentioned it I'm kind of getting the hankering to build it. Been a long time since I've had a Super Sportster flying!!! A DLE-30 would make a nice combo in that plane!!! hmmmmmm

Thanks, guys, but this is a fully built airplane so instructions and/or plans are not needed at this time. This is a plane that a friend simply quit flying several years ago as he simply intended to go all electric. I admired it and he gave it to me. It has a .90 Super Tigre on the front, and daveopam is correct in the close fit part. It is REALLY close. I have always thought the Super Sportster is one of the prettier planes I have ever seen but just never got around to purchasing one Now, I don't have to buy one. I intend to take it to the field with me Wednesday and let that Tigre roar for awhile. The engine was a bit gummy after sitting idle for a couple years, but it started OK and is still spitting black goo out the muffler and is not quite right yet. I will let it run for awhile on the run-up bench at the field and if it cleans up we'll see how she flies. It is a pretty thing.

Max, you got lucky. I used the SS 60 as a teaching aid years ago then went over to the 4* 60 for students first build. The SS is an outstanding plane and fantastic flying machine. If someone wanted to give me a big one I would find room in my shop for it. I never got one of the big ones for my own but always wanted one. Getting one already built would be a treat for me.
