Default Paint for Foamy

I bought a foam electric plane that came with water-slide decals. After fussing with them for a short time, I decided that a) I don't like decals and b) I hate the color scheme. I would just like a simple two-color starburst design on the top and a contrasting design (straight bar) on the bottom. What kind of paint can I use on the foam? Are acrylic artist paints safe to use on foam? What other options do I have? Ultra-cote will obviously not work.

I use the "paint for plastics" spray cans. It is made by a few different manufacturers and it is the paint used on outdoor lawn furniture. I use their primer first after I wipe down the foam with Naptha to remove the release agent and other grease, dirt, etc.

Anything water based will work. Artists type acrylic will work, as will latex house paint. If it's EPO foam, Rustoleum or Krylon spray can paint will work. You can expect to have to touch up the paint from time to time as none of it sticks particular well to foam.

Thanks. I'll probably go with the acrylics as I have some on hand and good quality brushes.

I would spray if at all possible. A cheap airbrush will do. Brushing will add weight! Light models fly better.

Hmm. Good point. I have an airbrush I've never used, and a selection of paint colors to use for practice. Maybe time to learn a new technique.
