Hello:
I'm using a chicken stick to start my Alpha Trainer right now, what I'm looking for is a
good reliable electric starter and battery.
Any suggestons would be appreicated.

RE: best electric starter/battery
Most people use the startes sold at a hobby shop. They all work well. If you plan to get a bigger motor, but the high torque starter.
A small lead/acid battery from Wal-Mart works fine and costs about $20. You can get a small charger for it at the hobby shop.
If you have a flying field nearby, you should see that most everyone has one of these or they will give you some other ideas.

From a hobby source buy a sealed, maintenance-free battery. Tower sells the usual 7amp battery for $18 and a compact 4.5amp for $13. Charger is $12 and a combo deal is available. These batteries last for years.

By all means buy the sealed gel cell battery. They will turn a regular starter that can start up to .91 4 strokes. I've had mine for over 10 years and it is still as strong as ever. I got mine on the combo deal from Tower. Just any old charger won't work. Use the one intended for it. It can be charged through the starter outlets on your power panel. If you order one ask for the starter to be panel ready, no extra charge. The lead acid batteries from Walmart can spill their contents and must always be kept in an upright position. They don't hold a charge as well as the sealed batteries. They are usually motorcycle batteries and I haven't found one for 20 bucks in a long time. The 6V may go for that but the 12V doesn't.

After using many combos I settled on the Magnum geared starter (same type as Kavan) with two (2) 7.2 volt 2400 mah car batteries wired in series (gives 14.4 volts). It is totally portable and very light weight. Spins my friends Saito 1.80 and my Saito R325 5-cyl radial with ease.
Works for me.

For best performance, especially if you are running larger engines, get a lawn mower batter from any of the discount houses. They will outperform a gell cell in all respects. They do have a dissadvantage though, they are heavier to lug around.
