Default Engine for GP Extra 300S .40 ARF

I just got a new Great Planes Extra 300S .40 ARF. Could anyone recommend an engine for this plane. I have an O.S. .46 LA, which will be mounted on it as soon as I finish putting the plane together. However, I have read and heard that a .46 (even a .46 FX) is too weak for this plane, so I was thinking of maybe getting a .61. What do you guys think? Money is an object, so as much as I would love to buy one of those beutiful Saito engines, it's out of the question. I know this plane is not meant to fly 3D, but I would like it to be able to hover and fly with authority. I rather have a bit of power to spare, than fall short. I also understand weigh is an issue, that is why I can't decide on what to get. These are the engines I am considering:

Tower Hobbies .61 Ball Bearing ABC

O.S. .46 FX

O.S. .61 FX

O.S. .50 SX Ringed

What would you guys recommend? What do you guys think about the Tower Hobbies engines?
I would really appreaciate it if you cold help me with this. Thanks.

I put a Thunder Tiger Pro-61 and it flies great but you have to fly it in on landing, mainly because of the wing loading. I run at about 2/3 throttle and get about 12 minute flights. There isn't much this plane can't do. You will like it!

MAYDAY.....

Glad you figured it out....hope this move helps.....ALSO if you do a search for the GP EXTRA, you will find that there are several threads on this one. MINNFLYER, another MODERATOR here, has lots of good info. You can PM him.....He is out for a couple of days, but if you try him toward the end of the week he should be back.....

One thing I can say is that most people seem to think that this plane builds heavy, so a little extra power might be nice. Try to find a good powerplant that is light weight.

Hey BTW....if you go to your SETTINGS page, you can set it up so your PMs will notify you when you get a new one

Thanks to all of you for the help.

After reading some of the posts on this matter, I was thinking of going with the Tower Hobbies 61 or the 75. The 75 is actually lighter than the 61, and of course has more power. what do you guys think? Will the 75 be too much? Thanks again for your help.

No such thing as "too much"

I had one of these with a Saito .72 in it and it was the perfect combo. With a 13 x 6 APC the plane has more than enough vertical and plently of power to pull it through any maneuver you can dram up. Be careful of the balance and keep the elevator throws low since the design has a nasty habit of snapping on you when you least expect it, at least mine did once I moved the CG back a bit to much.

I flew mine with an OS .61FX and it was agreat combination until I had a switch failure. I have a new one in the box, Tower scratch & dent with only hardware missing. Great for general sport flying, tracks true & will do most anything I want. To hover & do 3d a OS .91FX would be great, more power & less weight than the .61. Enjoy.

Thank you all for the help. I finished putting the plane together, installed my OS 46 LA and it is way tail heavy. I installed the battery all the way in the front added a couple of oz of lead to the motor mount and nothing. I've decided to buy the Tower Hobbies .75. I hope '3DFanatic' is right, and that there is no such thing as "too much" I know the weight certainly won't be too much. Thanks again and happy flying! 00000000000000000000 oops! that's my cat trying to get my fingers as I type.
